SOMETIMES, we wake up to an ordinary — or worse, a slow-news — day. Other times, we get days like today, when Apple drops a bomb on us without any warning. In this case, the bomb is a red variant of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, officially called the Apple iPhone 7 (Product)Red Special Edition.

There’s nothing new in the specs department. In fact, it’s like the jet-black iPhone launched in September 2016 — from the storage options to the camera sensors — but with a fresh coat of paint. (Click this for complete specs of the iPhone 7 and this for the full specs of the iPhone 7 Plus.)

What’s special here is what the handset represents: a recognition of more than 10 years of partnership between Apple and (Red), which seeks to eliminate HIV/AIDS in Africa. Part of the proceeds will go to the Global Fund.

Fortunately, those who are based in the Philippines can buy the iPhone 7 (Product)Red Special Edition on its first day of availability. Starting at 11:01 p.m. on March 24th, you may order the red variant from the Apple Store. Here are the local prices that you should remember:

  • iPhone 7 128GB model: P43,990 (around $876)
  • iPhone 7 256GB model: P49,990 ($995)
  • iPhone 7 Plus 128GB model: P50,990 ($1,015)
  • iPhone 7 Plus 256GB model: P56,990 ($1,135)

We would have wanted the front of the special-edition iPhone to be black and not white, just like the OPPO R9s we were able to get our hands on in January. That would have looked more elegant. But it doesn’t take away the fact that the red version is still good to look at.
