Remember the Samsung SM-J260G that showed up on benchmarking site Geekbench end-April? It’s allegedly Samsung’s first smartphone running Android Oreo (Go edition). Now, there’s a report claiming that the budget device is being tested in markets other than India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

According to Samsung-focused community site SamMobile, the Korean tech giant is doing some trials across Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

The unit with the model number SM-J260F is being tested in the Caucasus countries, France, Germany, Italy, Kazakhstan, Poland, Russia, the United Kingdom, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. The one with the model number SM-J260M is being put through its paces in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Panada, Paraguay, Peru, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Meanwhile, in Asia, the Samsung SM-J260G’s new markets include Cambodia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Unfortunately, there was no mention of the Philippines.

We agree with SamMobile: It could be that Samsung is testing the waters for a stock Android phone. By launching it in many markets, they could gauge the demand for it.

In case you didn’t know, Android Go is a version of the Google mobile OS that’s optimized for entry-level devices with at most 1GB of RAM. It saves space wherever it’s needed, uses less data, and boasts the same key security features as the full-blown Android Oreo. Which means the handsets should be able to run smoothly even with basic specs.

In the Philippines, smartphones running Android Oreo (Go edition) — such as the Nokia 1 and the Cherry Mobile Flare P3 Plus, Flare P3, and Flare P3 Lite — are already available in stores nationwide.
