Xiaomi YU7 electric SUV debuts. Is this the Tesla Model Y killer?

At its latest launch event in China, Xiaomi didn’t just trot out the Xiaomi 15s Pro and Xiaomi Pad 7 Ultra — the first devices rocking its freshly unveiled 3nm Xring O1 mobile chip. No, it also pulled the wraps off the Xiaomi YU7, their sophomore electric car, looking to follow up on the well-received SU7 sedan.

Scheduled for release in China this July, the YU7 is clearly gunning for Tesla’s reigning champ, the Model Y. In fact, Xiaomi CEO and founder Lei Jun didn’t shy away from directly pitting the YU7’s range against the Model Y’s during his presentation. He proudly touted the base variant’s impressive 835 kilometers of range, a notable leap past the Model Y’s 719 kilometers. But don’t go grabbing your wallet just yet; the company’s keeping mum on the YU7’s specific pricing and preorder info for now.

Considering the SU7’s aggressive pricing against the Tesla Model 3, it’s highly probable the Xiaomi YU7 will similarly undercut the Model Y in China, solidifying the brand’s all-out assault on the EV market. For a quick reference, the latter kicks off at ¥263,500 (around $36,574 in U.S. dollars or P2 million in Philippine pesos), while the Xiaomi SU7, in its standard trim, starts at ¥215,900 ($29,968 or P1,659,335).

Just like the SU7, the Xiaomi YU7 will roll out in three distinct variants: Standard, Pro, and Max. The Standard model sports a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive setup, pushing out 320Ps of power and hitting 0 to 100km/h in a respectable 5.88 seconds.

Stepping up, the Pro and Max variants juice things up with dual-motor powertrains, churning out 496Ps and 690Ps, respectively. These higher-performance EVs slash acceleration times, with the Pro doing 0 to 100 km/h in 4.27 seconds and the Max clocking in at a blistering 3.23 seconds.

As for its looks, the Xiaomi YU7 rocks a pretty interesting aesthetic. Online chatter has already drawn comparisons between the YU7’s styling and high-performance SUVs like Ferrari’s Purosangue, which debuted in 2022, and even Toyota’s 2023 Crown Sport. Dimension-wise, Xiaomi’s five-seat SUV measures 4,999mm long, 1,996mm wide, and 1,600mm high, with a 3,000mm wheelbase — making it larger than the updated Tesla Model Y.
