GCash has officially leveled up its payment game, following the introduction of its new Tap to Pay feature.
The company even brought out GCash ambassador Heart Evangelista-Escudero to launch it in style. The Filipino actress and fashion darling joined a live recording of the GCash Spotlight YouTube series with host Boy Abunda and celebrity stylist Pam Quinones.
In between dishing on her latest Fashion Week looks and how turning 40 has shifted her perspective on fame, Heart was there to, of course, talk about Tap to Pay.
Tap, pay, and go
What’s the big deal? The new feature streamlines both local and international payments by using your smartphone’s Near Field Communication chip. It’s now live at thousands of merchants nationwide and is accepted at any Mastercard-enabled NFC terminal worldwide through partners like Alipay Plus. You can still scan a QR code, but tapping is undeniably faster and far more convenient.
The catch? For now, Tap to Pay is only available to GCash users with Android devices sporting an NFC chip (sorry, iPhone crowd).
Nonetheless, Tap to Pay is a potential game-changer for Filipino travelers, letting them pay for coffee in Tokyo or shop in Singapore with just a tap of their phone — no more fumbling for foreign currency. We gave it a spin during the launch event, and it’s impressively quick and seamless.
Regarding security, GCash assures that the feature is secure — a claim backed by card networks and security experts worldwide. This is due to the inherent security of contactless technology, which ensures your card or device does not physically touch a payment terminal.
