Xiaomi‘s Redmi brand has a singular obsession: stuffing truly absurd, high-end specs into phones priced well below the competition. The newly announced Redmi K90 Pro Max, launched recently in China, is a declaration of war on the concept of a “true flagship.” It’s the return of the “Pro Max” moniker, and this time, it’s packing next-gen silicon, a monstrous battery, and an audio feature that sounds utterly ridiculous — and therefore, necessary.

The engine room of the Redmi K90 Pro Max is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, paired with the Adreno 840 GPU and up to 16GB of blazing-fast LPDDR5X RAM. That power is backed by a large 7,560mAh silicon-carbon battery, which supports lightning-fast 100-watt wired and 50-watt wireless charging, plus 22.5-watt reverse wireless.

Peering at the world through its huge 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED display, you are treated to a 1.5K resolution panel with a 120Hz refresh rate that peaks at 3,500 nits of local brightness, all protected by Xiaomi Dragon Crystal Glass. Oh, and you get an IP68 ingress rating and an ultrasonic under-display fingerprint reader, because of course you do.

The wild-card features

In a move that elevates the smartphone past the “flagship killer” title and into pure spectacle, Redmi partnered with Bose to tune a 2.1 channel speaker system. It includes an independent woofer cunningly placed on the back of the device. Redmi is making bold claims about “class-leading bass output,” which suggests the K90 Pro Max might be loud enough to annoy your seatmate on the bus.

The camera system is similarly uncompromising. The triple 50-megapixel array on the rear is anchored by a main shooter using the 1/1.31-inch Light Fusion 950 sensor (reportedly lifted from the Xiaomi 17 line) with optical image stabilization or OIS. This sensor offers a 23mm equivalent focal range and covers a 13.5EV of dynamic range. It’s paired with a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto lens capable of 5x optical zoom and an equally high-res 50-megapixel ultrawide lens.

Capping off the package is a 32-megapixel selfie cam, Android 16-based HyperOS 3, and a variety of finishes, including a cool Denim Blue fabric back and a Champion Edition in collaboration with the Lamborghini Automobiles Racing Team.

The contender: Redmi K90

While the Pro Max version hogs the spotlight, the standard Redmi K90 is a powerhouse in its own right, positioning itself as a midrange contender that punches way above its weight. It opts for the Snapdragon 8 Elite 5G with Adreno 830 GPU, a still-massive 7,100mAh silicon-carbon battery with 100-watt wired charging, and a slightly smaller 6.59-inch 1.5K AMOLED display. The screen also hits 3,500 nits peak brightness and features DC dimming that can drop the display to just 1 nit for eye-strain-free viewing. The camera system features a 50-megapixel main sensor (Light Hunter 800) and a 50-megapixel telephoto with 2.5x optical zoom, alongside a more modest 8-megapixel ultrawide.
