Heartopia: 5 standout features of this viral cozy mobile game

We’ve clocked in an unhealthy amount of hours on The Sims franchise and practically lived on our islands in Animal Crossing during the pandemic.

For the longest time, we’ve been waiting for a mobile game that recreates that magic — something we can play with friends and family. You know, without the dreaded stamina system slapping you in the face every five minutes or forcing you to swipe a credit card just to keep the fun going.

Enter Heartopia. Developed by XD Games, the same folks behind TapTap and Torchlight: Infinite (which we also played a lot), this highly awaited cozy sim has been on everyone’s radar for months — and for good reason. It recently launched on iOS and Android, plus PC via a standalone client, so you can start playing now. As for the Steam loyalists? Sit tight, it’s coming to your favorite platform later this year.

We dove into the gameplay to see if the hype is real and whether this is the mobile experience we’ve all been waiting for. Honestly, we’re loving every second of it. Here’s why you might want to clear some storage space and give Heartopia a try.

1. The visuals are stunning

We’re used to getting catfished by mobile game ads, but Heartopia actually delivers. No pixelated graphics here — this title looks remarkably polished. The in-game world is vibrant, the lighting is soft, and the art style looks like a hybrid of titles like The Sims and Animal Crossing.

Whether you’re running through the town or just staring at the background scenery, it’s giving AAA vibes. It’s definitely eye candy for those of us who care about graphics.

But a quick heads-up on performance: We tested Heartopia on flagships rocking the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and Snapdragon 8 Elite chipsets. While it hits a buttery-smooth 60 FPS with graphics maxed out, our devices got toasty rather quickly. We also tried it on a phone powered by the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 processor, and it struggled on High and Ultra settings. We had to dial it down to the medium preset to get a consistent 60 FPS experience. Having said that, you’ll need a pretty powerful device if you want to run this app at its absolute prettiest.

    2. OOTD game is strong

If you’re the type who spends 90% of your playtime in character creation (guilty!), you’re going to love this. The customization is detailed right out of the gate. You can dress up your avatar in the cutest outfits without looking like a generic nonplayer character.

Dressing up in Heartopia gives off “main character energy” in the best way possible. And we aren’t just talking about a few shirts here. According to the official website, there are more than 1,000 items you can use to dress up your character. With a wardrobe that huge, you’re basically required to turn your gameplay into a digital fashion show. Prepare to take a lot of screenshots of your fit.

      Some how-tos for newbies!

      3. It’s not just farming — hello, bird watching?

We’ve seen fishing and gardening a million times in cozy titles, but Heartopia adds some unique hobbies to the mix. We’re talking bird watching, bug catching, and a surprisingly deep Animal Care system.

Yes, you can adopt cats and dogs in the game. And pets have different personalities, so even if you adopt the same breed, they can act differently. You can even breed them to unlock unique color combinations. We actually saw a cat that looked like a panda. Speaking of which, actual pandas are in the game too, along with a variety of wild animals. If you want to live your best fur-parent life virtually, Heartopia has you covered.

        4. You can build your dream sanctuary

The housing system here isn’t just slapping a bed in a corner and calling it a day. You get layouts, decoration freedom, and lighting options to make your place feel like a real home. One of the reviewers mentioned the building aspect is kinda addictive, so say goodbye to your free time. Whether you want a cozy cottage or a modern pad, you can design it here.

But here’s a pro tip before you get too excited: You can’t just buy a massive mansion on Day 1. Expanding your land (read: Home Plots) is tied to your rank in the D.G. Member’s Guild. To unlock more space, you need to earn Contribution Medals by completing Daily Resident Requests — and, unfortunately, you’re capped at only five requests a day.

So, if you want to reach Level 4 and double your plot limit, you need to be consistent. Do your dailies, don’t ghost your NPC neighbors, and remember to actually buy the plot with Gold in the game once you unlock the limit.

          5. No more playing alone

Unlike some life sims where you’re stuck on an island talking to yourself, Heartopia is a shared world. Every time you log in, you’re sharing the space with a few random real people.

The real fun starts when you’re with friends. Once you finish the tutorial and build your house, you unlock the Friendship Journal, which lets you add your besties via unique ID. Just a heads-up, though: Sending a friend request costs 1 Star, which you earn from quests, so don’t spam randoms!

Once you’re friends, visiting their world is totally free, with no stamina or tickets required. You can fish together by the pond, hunt for bugs, explore the map for rare plants, or just take cute group selfies using exclusive co-op poses you can’t get solo. All of this makes Heartopia a great chill spot for when you just can’t hang out in person.

            Our early verdict

Is Heartopia perfect? No, we really would have loved to see controller support especially on mobile. But for a free app that looks this good? It’s definitely worth a download. It hits that sweet spot of cozy gameplay without feeling like a cash grab. You get plenty of enjoyable activities and a ton of cute outfits you can unlock just by playing — no credit card required.

It has become our new addiction. We literally can’t stop playing it with our family. If you’ve been looking for a chill game that respects your time — and your wallet — Heartopia is an easy choice.
