For years, the entertainment-focused POCO M lineup was the safe, budget-friendly choice you recommended to your parents or students who needed a reliable daily driver. But with today’s global launch of the POCO M8 Series, the Xiaomi subbrand looks like it’s tired of playing it safe.

The new POCO M8 Pro 5G and POCO M8 5G are bringing features we usually only see in premium flagships or specialized rugged phones — specifically large silicon-carbon batteries and IP69K durability ratings — down to a price point that is frankly aggressive. Here is everything you need to know about the POCO’s latest midrange contenders.

POCO M8 Pro 5G

Let’s talk about the tank in the room. The POCO M8 Pro 5G is built around a 6,500mAh silicon-carbon battery.

If you haven’t been following battery technology lately, silicon-carbon is the reason modern flagships are getting bigger capacities without getting thicker. It allows for higher energy density, which is how POCO managed to squeeze that 6,500mAh cell into a body that’s just 8.3mm thick. It supports 100-watt HyperCharge, which POCO claims can top up the unit from 0% to 100% in about 40 minutes.

And then there’s its durability. The Pro model comes with an IP69K rating. Usually, you see IP68 on flagships (submersion protection). IP69K goes a step further, certifying protection against high-pressure, high-temperature water jets. Combined with a “high-strength structural design” and SGS certification, this smartphone is designed to take a beating that would shatter most glass sandwiches.

Under the hood, the M8 Pro 5G is running the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 4, a 4nm chip that POCO says cracks the 1-million mark on AnTuTu benchmarks. It’s paired with up to 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Up front, you’re looking at a 6.83-inch 1.5K Flow AMOLED panel. It hits a peak brightness of 3,200 nits and uses 3840Hz PWM dimming to keep your eyes from straining at night.

  • 6.83-inch Flow AMOLED display, 1.5K CrystalRes resolution, 3200 nits brightness

POCO M8 5G

If the Pro is the muscle, the standard POCO M8 5G is the athlete. It cuts the thickness down to an ultraslim 7.35mm and weighs just 178g.

Despite the thin profile, the device doesn’t completely sacrifice endurance. It still packs a respectable 5,520mAh battery with 45-watt charging. It swaps the processor for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, which is more than capable for daily tasks and moderate gaming, though it won’t crush benchmarks like its big brother.

The POCO M8 5G keeps the Flow AMOLED pedigree with a 120Hz refresh rate and the same 3,200-nit peak brightness, which is a nice touch for the base model.

Specs

  • 6.77-inch Flow AMOLED display, 120Hz refresh rate, 3200 nits brightness
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 processor
  • 8GB RAM
  • 256GB / 512GB storage
