nubia Neo 5 GT 5G review: Beating the heat on a sub-₱20,000 budget

In Phones by Ramon LopezLeave a Comment

In a sea of midrange smartphones trying to please everyone, the nubia Neo 5 GT 5G is a breath of fresh air.

It doesn’t pretend to be a pocket DSLR, nor does it try to be a safe, everyday jack-of-all-trades. From the moment you see its bold design language, translucent back panel, and RGB lighting, it’s clear this phone has one distinct area of expertise: mobile gaming.

Borrowing heavily from the DNA of its REDMAGIC cousins, nubia‘s latest contender attempts something highly ambitious: bringing flagship-level gaming hardware like physical shoulder triggers, a 144Hz AMOLED display, and active cooling to the sub-₱20,000 (sub-$329) price segment.

But to pack in this much specialized hardware on a strict budget, calculated sacrifices had to be made under the hood and in the camera array. The question is: Do these compromises pay off when the heat is on? Read our review of the nubia Neo 5 GT 5G to find out.

Built for the battlefield

On the outside, everything about the nubia Neo 5 GT 5G screams “gaming phone.” The aggressive styling makes it obviously geared toward a specific crowd. It’s a design choice that traces right back to nubia’s role as the mother brand of REDMAGIC, famous for premium gaming products with similarly unapologetic looks.

There’s a lot to unpack hardware-wise, but the small details stand out first. The physical side buttons sit dead center on the frame, making them easy to reach on such a large device. The power button is textured and painted bright red, so you can find it without looking. Even the rear cameras sit flush against the back panel, saving your fingers from bumping into protruding lenses while you play. It’s these little things that stack up, proving the attention to detail here is exceptionally high — much higher than your average midrange handset.

Take a closer look at the nubia Neo 5 GT 5G

Durability is another strong suit. The fact that the Neo 5 GT 5G carries an IP64 rating is impressive, especially considering it houses a built-in cooling fan. It gives you added peace of mind against the elements when gaming outdoors. Keep in mind, IP64 means the body is dust-tight and splash-proof, able to withstand light rain or accidental spills, but it’s not designed for submersion, heavy rain, or high-pressure water.

This is neither a thin nor a light device. It has some real heft to it, but that’s completely understandable given everything nubia packed inside. The aggressive gaming aesthetic should appeal to gamers (though maybe not minimalists), and the Electro Gold colorway they sent over is eye-catching, contrasting nicely against the pitch-black plastic frame.

Meanwhile, the RGB lighting around the back is split into two modules. One illuminates the fan area, while the other lights up the “eye” design and “GT” branding. You can customize the colors; the fan light, in particular, offers several multicolor options alongside single-color modes. You can also set them to disable automatically when the battery dips below 20% or pick between different lighting patterns. It’s a ton of customization, which is always great to see.

As for the shoulder triggers, they are incredibly responsive in practice. With a quoted 550Hz touch-sensing rate, they support single taps, long presses, rapid taps, dual functions on a single trigger, and even macros. If you play shooters or MOBAs, you’ll probably find them indispensable, giving you an advantage over opponents using regular smartphones. It wasn’t long ago that capable shoulder triggers were exclusive to flagship gaming phones. Now, you get them here for a fraction of the premium.

Audio is handled by a stereo speaker setup, with the secondary speaker tucked cleanly inside the earpiece. There’s no top-edge cutout, which is a smart move since you’d likely end up blocking it anyway while gaming or watching videos in landscape mode.

On the display front, nubia prioritized speed without compromising picture quality. The Neo 5 GT 5G packs a sizable 6.8-inch 1.5K AMOLED panel with a peak brightness of 4,500 nits and a blazing 144Hz maximum refresh rate — faster than what most flagships offer today.

The screen is vibrant and bright enough to be highly legible outdoors, and the under-display fingerprint reader proved reliable. And unlike many competitors, the brand gives you granular control over the refresh rate. You can lock it at 60Hz, 90Hz, 120Hz, or 144Hz, or leave it on Auto. Leaving it on Auto is the smart play; it scales down when 144Hz isn’t needed to save battery. Having the option to force the elusive 90Hz is a rare and welcome touch as well.

Cool under pressure

Under the hood, the nubia Neo 5 GT 5G is powered by the 4nm MediaTek Dimensity 7400 platform. It’s a decidedly midrange processor. In the Philippines, this SoC is paired with either 8GB or 12GB of physical RAM and 256GB of internal storage. There’s no microSD card slot here.

For day-to-day tasks and light multitasking, we found our unit to be plenty smooth. You won’t have any issues running everyday apps. Where it lacks power is raw graphical grunt. The Dimensity 7400 simply doesn’t have the muscle to push the most demanding modern games at their absolute highest settings and frame rates, which renders the 144Hz display somewhat underutilized in certain titles.

Still, our unit managed over a million points in the latest version of Antutu Benchmark. It handles intensive titles like the mobile port of Tomb Raider (2013) at a consistent 30 FPS on Graphics mode and 40 FPS on the Performance preset, too. Huge open-world action RPGs like the recently launched The Seven Deadly Sins: Origin run at a decent 40 FPS on Medium settings. If you’re a competitive player, things get much better, as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang runs flawlessly at 120 FPS, and Delta Force hits a smooth 90 FPS, which is impressive for a graphically demanding shooter.

More importantly, what the smartphone lacks in sheer punch, it makes up for with sustained performance during marathon play sessions — largely thanks to its built-in cooling fan (a first in its class, we’re told) and a massive 29,508mm² cooling area. The fan can get quite loud on its fastest preset, but if you’re wearing earphones, playing in a noisy room, or just blasting the speakers, you probably won’t mind. The trade-off is absolutely worth it to prevent your device from turning into a hot burrito over time.

True to nubia’s claims, the cooling system is indeed highly effective. In the 3DMark Wild Life Stress Test, the phone maintained a near-perfect 99.5% stability with the fan on. When we turned the fan off, that score dropped by a full 10% to 89%. We saw a similar trend in the CPU Throttling Test app, where our unit achieved a 92% stability score with active cooling enabled, compared to 86% when switched off. While these are synthetic results, in the real world, that stability could be the difference between maintaining buttery-smooth gameplay in an intense ranked match and suffering frame drops due to thermal throttling.

Powering all this is a 6,210mAh dual-cell battery, allowing for all-day use even with marathon gaming sessions. Just remember that the built-in fan — which, by default, automatically turns on for games and benchmarks — will drain the battery faster. Additionally, nubia included bypass charging. This routes power directly to the handset’s internals instead of the battery, preventing heat buildup and saving your battery’s long-term health.

The 80-watt wired charging is also superb; an hour on the plug is enough for a full day. The fan turns on while fast-charging to keep temperatures down, and we highly encourage keeping this enabled for both practicality and safety.

The 80-watt wired charging impresses. Just an hour plugged in powers a full day’s use

We also have to talk about the software. Borrowing from REDMAGIC, nubia brought a professional Game Space overlay to the Neo 5 GT 5G, resulting in what is easily the best gaming hub you’ll find in the midrange. The sheer volume of options is dizzying. There are toggles for performance profiles, fan modes, touch sensitivity, aftermarket accessories, LED lighting, trigger mapping, and even a tiny in-game overlay to track your FPS, battery, and playtime.

Tying all of this together is the preloaded Demi AI Copilot 2.0 app, essentially acting as your built-in gaming buddy. Instead of just giving you a standard dashboard, it actually tries to coach you. It feeds you real-time status updates during sweaty MOBA or shooter matches, and there’s even a chatbot you can ping for instant gameplay tips if you get stuck. But the coolest trick might be Demi Auto-Chat, a feature that reads and replies to your messages in the background so you don’t have to pause a live match just to text someone back.

Beyond gaming, practical AI functions include AI Memory as an information hub, AI Scam Alert for fraud protection, and AI tools for image/text generation and translation.

Cameras are functional, but not the focus

If there is an obvious compromise here, it’s probably the optics. The nubia Neo 5 GT 5G features a 50-megapixel main sensor and a 16-megpaixel front-facing camera. The absence of a telephoto lens is understandable at this price, but omitting a dedicated ultra-wide is a notable miss. There’s also no wide lens on the selfie shooter, though that’s fairly common among midrangers today.

To compensate for the hardware deficiencies, the company packed the native camera app with a rich software experience, including filters, shooting modes, and an AI scene optimizer. When active, this AI identifies subjects, like text, blue skies, greenery, or night scenes, to automatically optimize camera settings for the best shot.

Both the rear and front cameras are decent for social media snaps, but they are pretty underwhelming if you take photography seriously. Software tricks can only do so much to mask an underwhelming base sensor.

Sample shots

For video, the rear camera maxes out at 4K/30fps, and the front does 1080p/30fps. The lack of a 60fps option for 4K is disappointing, especially since MediaTek’s own website confirms the Dimensity 7400 is capable of it. Overall, camera performance is where this model falls behind its competitors in this price bracket.

On a positive note, the nubia Neo 5 GT 5G uses Google Photos as its default gallery app. This means you get access to handy features like applying background blur after the fact and a surprisingly capable Magic Eraser to remove photobombers.

Final thoughts

The nubia Neo 5 GT 5G knows exactly what it wants to be. At ₱17,999 ($296) for the base model with 8GB of physical RAM and 256GB of internal storage and ₱19,999 ($329) for the 12GB/256GB version in the Philippines, it delivers a respectable, hardware- and software-rich gaming experience.

Yes, the cameras leave a lot to be desired, and the mid-tier processor could be a bit more powerful. But thanks to the ingenious active cooling system, it squeezes every ounce of potential out of its silicon. Add in the 144Hz AMOLED display and fantastic shoulder triggers, and the verdict is clear: If you are serious about mobile gaming, the nubia Neo 5 GT 5G confidently lives up to its promise.
