Is Globe seeking price cuts on fiber service? (UPDATE: Yes!)

(UPDATE: Globe has just confirmed new pricing tiers for its fiber-based broadband service: 50 Mbps for P2,499 per month; 100 Mbps for P3,499; 200 Mbps for P4,499; 500 Mbps for P7,499; and a whopping 1 Gbps for P9,499. Check how it compares with plans being offered in other countries here.)

Globe Telecom will reportedly bring down the prices of its high-speed fiber service by a significant amount this month, a report from local tech blog YugaTech claims.

Globe’s discounted fiber plans, which are said to be available starting Saturday, October 24, will offer maximum download speeds between 50 Mbps and 100 Mbps for P2,499 and P3,499 monthly.

Interestingly, Globe has an ongoing promotion for its fiber service in which customers are entitled to a hefty 50 percent discount on their monthly service fee for the first year. I assume the original discount will no longer be offered once the new pricing goes into effect.

Perhaps the most compelling argument for upgrading to a fiber connection — besides the obvious speed boost — is the promise of unlimited data, however deceptive that may be. The term “unlimited,” is never guaranteed in the telecom industry, and Globe’s current DSL and mobile-phone subscriptions are proof of that.

Another thing: Not all areas in the country are fiber-ready; for the full list of locations where Globe’s fiber plans are available, mosey over to the company’s website.

I’ve reached out to Globe for comment and will update if I hear back.
