Looking for a budget smartphone? Xiaomi is gearing up to launch the Redmi A5 in the Philippines on May 20.

(Update, May 19: It’s even less expensive! We now have the official Redmi A5 prices.)

The said model shakes things up visually this year, ditching the circular camera module and faux-leather finish of its predecessor for a modern, pill-shaped rear camera cutout and a matte-finish back. But the real story is under the hood, with Xiaomi opting for the new Unisoc T7250 4G SoC. This chip features two Cortex-A75 performance cores and a Mali-G57 GPU clocked at 850MHz, which bodes well for entry-level gaming performance. The company itself claims the T7250 can hit over 260,000 points in AnTuTu Benchmark — a respectable figure for a device in this segment, even if the chip is still built on a pretty dated 12nm process.

Other notable specs rounding out the package include a surprisingly high-resolution 32-megapixel main rear camera, an 8-megapixel front-facer for selfies, a standard headphone jack, and a larger 5,200mAh battery with support for 15-watt fast wired charging. Plus, you get a side-mounted fingerprint reader for quick and convenient unlocking.

According to the listings we at Revü Philippines spotted, the Redmi A5 is expected to arrive in two configurations: a base model with 3GB of physical RAM and 64GB of internal storage, and a higher-end variant packing 4GB RAM and 128GB storage. You’ll have four color options to choose from — Sandy Gold, Midnight Black, Ocean Blue, and Lake Green.

As for the pricing, those same online listings suggest the Redmi A5 could start from P4,599 (around $82) locally, though early birds will be able to purchase it for a bit less at launch. For context, its predecessor, the Redmi A3, arrived in the Philippines last April with a starting price of P3,399 ($61) for the 3GB/64GB model, topping out at P3,999 ($72) for the 4GB/128GB version.
