Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate Design: Brand’s 18-inch foldable PC is here

Huawei recently announced a new product that’s creating quite a buzz online. The newly launched Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate Design is the Chinese tech company’s first-ever foldable laptop, putting them squarely in the ring with the likes of ASUS and Lenovo.

Unsurprisingly, the Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate Design won’t come cheap. It kicks off at ¥23,999 (roughly $3,329 or P185,154) in China. What’s less clear is if the brand plans to bring this foldable laptop to the Philippines and other international markets anytime soon. Unlike its rivals, though, it isn’t running Windows out of the box. Instead, it’s powered by Huawei’s own HarmonyOS 5 platform, which, from what we’ve seen in previews, sports a macOS-like interface and supports a bunch of gestures.

But what you really care about is that screen, right? The MateBook Fold Ultimate Design packs a massive 18-inch foldable display that shrinks down to a compact 13-inch laptop form factor, but it’s also ready for a whole host of usage scenarios. You can, for example, prop up the device with its built-in kickstand and hook it up to a physical keyboard, either vertically or horizontally. Or, just use it as a massive secondary monitor.

The screen boasts a sharp 3.3K resolution, a smooth 144Hz refresh rate, and up to 1,600 nits of peak HDR brightness. Huawei also claims this is the world’s first dual-layer OLED panel on a foldable PC.

Another thing that stands out, it’s just how ultraportable this machine is. Weighing in at a mere 1.16 kilograms and measuring a slender 14.9mm when closed, it’s incredibly portable. Open it up, and it’s an impossibly thin 7.3mm. The company credits an ultra-thin PCB and a three-layer aluminum structure for packing everything in while ensuring the Huawei MateBook Fold Ultimate Design stays rigid.

Its construction also boasts a basalt waterdrop hinge with a three-stage shaft and a mortise-and-tenon structure. This clever design ensures the display folds smoothly, maintains long-term structural stability, and even supports a full 180-degree fold. And for keeping things cool? There’s a vapor chamber routing heat to two super-slim fans to chill that chipset.

Speaking of what’s under the hood, Huawei’s keeping the exact CPU a secret for now, but we do know the MateBook Fold Ultimate Design will pack 32GB of RAM and your choice of 1TB or 2TB of NVMe PCIe SSD storage. You’ll also find a 74.69Wh battery that supports blazing-fast 140-watt charging, a convenient fingerprint power button, an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, and a six-speaker system tuned with Huawei Sound technology.
