Lossless audio now on Spotify. Here’s how to enable it

After years of teasing and delays, Spotify is finally bringing lossless audio to its Premium subscribers.

The move, which has been a long time coming for audiophiles, means that Spotify users can now stream music in high-fidelity quality, putting the platform on a par with rivals like Apple Music, Amazon Music, and Tidal. Even better, the update comes at no extra cost — a pleasant surprise given previous speculation that lossless streaming would be available on a separate, higher-priced tier.

How to turn on Lossless in the Spotify app

To take advantage of the new quality, Premium subscribers will need to manually enable the setting on each device. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open the app and tap your profile icon.
  2. Head to settings.
  3. Select “Media Quality.”
  4. Set your streaming quality to “Lossless.”
  5. Check “Download Quality” if you plan to save tracks offline.

There’s a caveat: The rollout is gradual, so not everyone will get the function at the same time. Spotify announced that the feature is now live in over 50 markets, including Australia, Austria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Japan, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The company aims to complete the global rollout by the end of October. Unfortunately for us here in the Philippines, lossless streaming isn’t an option yet.

Another thing to keep in mind is that this new feature is exclusive to music for now, so don’t expect your favorite podcasts or audiobooks to get the high-fidelity treatment. Spotify also recommends using a stable Wi-Fi connection and wired headphones or speakers to get the full benefit, since Bluetooth can compress the audio and basically undo all that quality. For hardware, devices from brands like Sony, Bose, Samsung, and Sennheiser that support Spotify Connect should work right out of the gate, with more brands like Sonos and Amazon to follow soon.

The announcement

Spotify’s lossless audio streams in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC. And while this is a significant step up from the previous 320kbps quality, it’s worth noting that it doesn’t quite match the higher-resolution offerings of Apple Music and other competitors, which go up to 24-bit/192 kHz.
