OPPO Find X9 impressions: Not a gaming phone, but it might as well be

OPPO is currently taking preorders in the Philippines for the OPPO Find X9, following the smartphone’s Chinese and global debuts.

You can pre-purchase the company’s latest flagship — and direct successor to last year’s OPPO Find X8 — at partner stores nationwide or exclusively online through OPPO’s official storefront on Shopee.

Want a data plan to go with your smartphone? The Find X9 is also available through Globe and Smart postpaid plans. We got our unit a little while back, and while we wait for the local review embargo to lift for our full deep-dive, we wanted to share our initial impressions on one specific area that really appeals to us.

And no, we aren’t talking about the camera — though we get it, packing the OPPO Find X8 Pro’s 50-megapixel main image sensor into the base model is a solid move. If you need the photo evidence, check out our earlier post featuring shots from the Philippine preview event.

Today, however, we’re zeroing in on gaming prowess. Why? Because the OPPO Find X9 is one of the very first to rock MediaTek’s Dimensity 9500 chipset on the market. The chipmaker is throwing big numbers around, claiming massive generational leaps over the Dimensity 9400 in CPU, GPU, and NPU performance, plus efficiency. Specifically, the new Dimensity 9500 is touted to deliver up to 32% faster single-core and 17% faster multicore speeds, alongside a 33% higher peak GPU performance and 42% better power efficiency.

Those are huge claims, and we were rightfully eager to see them translate to the real world. Plus, this local Find X9 configuration packs 16GB of physical RAM and 512GB of storage — a considerable memory upgrade over the single 12GB/256GB setup we got for the Find X8 here.

OPPO Find X9 gaming test: 60 FPS locked

Alright, let’s dive into the gaming benchmarks. First up: Genshin Impact. This gorgeously rendered open-world RPG is the ultimate hardware stress test for mobile devices, demanding bleeding-edge specs just to hit high detail and frame rates. Unsurprisingly, the Find X9 chews it up. We ran it with all graphics settings maxed out, locking in a pleasantly fluid 60 FPS (the device cap) with virtually no dips.

The real test, though, is sustained performance. Can it hold that peak over time? We’re happy to report that the answer is a resounding yes. Even playing under our room-temperature conditions, the review unit stayed remarkably cool. We ran a continuous 90-minute session (with only a single, brief pause) and the phone never got toasty. Warm, certainly, but easily manageable for touch controls — no external cooler needed.

Even better, the battery drain was just 18% over that grueling 90-minute session. That kind of efficiency while maxing out Genshin Impact is a solid showing for any Android flagship right now, and it’s a feather in the cap for both the OPPO Find X9’s overall tuning and the MediaTek Dimensity 9500’s thermal management.

Next up: Halls of Torment, the retro-styled action RPG that mashes up Diablo vibes with the bullet-hell gameplay of Vampire Survivors.

While it doesn’t look particularly demanding, Halls of Torment can be surprisingly punishing to even modern hardware during intense gameplay moments when the screen is literally filled with enemies and particle effects. Just check out the screenshot we included for this test. Doesn’t it look like ADHD on a screen?

Despite the chaos, the OPPO Find X9 held a stable 60 FPS, even when we couldn’t see our own character. Screen recording, which can result in massive FPS drops on other systems, didn’t introduce any noticeable FPS drops either; the game just kept hitting max frame rates on our unit.

We also threw Destiny: Rising at it — that now-popular free-to-play looter-shooter boasting console-quality visuals. The Find X9 delivered a consistent 60 FPS with zero thermal throttling after 30 minutes of nonstop action.

Beyond the raw chip performance, OPPO has equipped the Find X9 with gaming-specific software features, all accessible via its own Game Assistant overlay. This includes an optional real-time display overlay for monitoring FPS, CPU, and GPU usage; a dedicated performance mode to prioritize resources; and, crucially, bypass charging. The latter lets you power the device directly from the charger rather than the battery, potentially reducing heat buildup and eliminating throttling. That said, the brand isn’t marketing the Find X9 as a dedicated gaming phone, but it clearly has the chops to run at peak performance without melting down — a feat that most mainstream flagships still struggle with.

A new benchmark king?

Moving to the synthetic stuff, the OPPO Find X9, as expected, delivers where it counts. Multiple runs on Antutu V11 consistently pegged scores in the 3.4-million range even when tested at ambient room temperature (around 30 degrees Celsius). Perhaps even more telling, adding a dedicated cooler only provided a slight bump to our unit’s usual score. That’s actually fantastic news for consumers, as it proves the smartphone’s peak performance is sustainable without needing external active cooling.

We’re still deep into testing more intensive titles and even some PC emulation, so stay tuned for our full breakdown when the official review embargo drops later this month.

Locally, the OPPO Find X9 is available in Titanium Grey and Space Black colors, priced at P69,999 (or roughly $1,190) for the single top-end configuration with 16GB of physical RAM and 512GB of storage.
