Mobile gamers have been eating good lately. Following the release of the much-awaited mobile port of Red Dead Redemption, the mobile version of the hit Wuxia RPG Where Winds Meet is now available to play for iOS and Android. Even better, the game is free to play.

Where Winds Meet is currently rolling out on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Since it is a free-to-play title, players can expect in-app purchases, mostly focusing on cosmetics and convenience items, similar to other major mobile RPGs. The good news? From what we’ve seen so far, it is not a pay-to-win game.

Since Where Winds Meet is a free-to-play title, expect in-app purchases, mostly focusing on cosmetics and convenience items, similar to other major mobile RPGs. But from what we’ve seen so far, it is not a pay-to-win game

Developed by NetEase Games, Where Winds Meet made headlines when it was first released on PC and PS5 thanks to its stunning visuals and fluid combat. Now, that same expansive open-world experience has been optimized for touchscreens (and physical controllers), allowing players to dive into the chaotic era of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms right from their pockets.

For those unfamiliar with the title, Where Winds Meet isn’t just a hack-and-slash adventure. It offers a massive degree of freedom in how you interact with the world. While you start as a swordsman, the game’s unique identity system allows you to assume various other roles. Players can choose to live as a wandering martial artist saving villagers, or settle down to become a merchant. The mobile version also retains the signature Qinggong (read: lightness skill) mechanics, letting you run up walls, leap across rooftops, and glide over water with the cinematic flair of a high-budget martial arts film.

One of the most exciting announcements for veterans of the game is full support for cross-play and cross-progression. That means you can jump from your PC or console to your phone without skipping a beat — all your gear, progress, and purchases go with you.

However, you must link your mobile account before creating a character or logging in on your smartphone. According to the official FAQ, if you accidentally create a new character on your mobile first, the game won’t let you sync your old data later. To avoid that headache, just make sure you log in with your existing credentials the second you open the app.

Can your device run Where Winds Meet?

Since this is a visually demanding open-world RPG, you’ll need a decent unit to get the full experience. The developers note that the game has been optimized for a wide range of devices, though newer hardware is still recommended for the best experience.

Here are the official system requirements:

  • Android
    • OS: Android 7.1 or higher
    • RAM: 8GB or more
    • Processor (minimum): Snapdragon 778G / Dimensity 1000L / Exynos 2100
    • Processor (recommended): Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 / Dimensity 9200 / Exynos 2400

First impressions

We’ve been hands-on with Where Winds Meet since the global launch, and to say that we’re impressed is an understatement. The combat and movement feel incredibly fluid, and visually, it is arguably the best-looking mobile game we’ve played to date. In fact, it looks so good that we’ll be using it to benchmark our device reviews moving forward — at least for the models that can actually handle it.

Beyond the visuals, the story is intriguing enough to keep you glued to the screen for hours. The setting is a perfect blend of historically rich details and Wuxia fantasy, but what really stands out is how much freedom you have. The narrative unfolds through player choices, and because your actions have actual consequences, you can dive into multiple playthroughs without the experience ever feeling boring.

The game’s character-creation system is easily one of the most generous we’ve seen

We also have to praise the game’s character-creation tools, which are easily some of the most generous we’ve seen. You can spend hours tweaking sliders, but if you want to jump straight in, check out the Gallery tab in the creation screen to see the wildly inspired designs the community has already cooked up.

Performance-wise, the optimization is fantastic on flagship silicon. Our smartphones running the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and MediaTek Dimensity 9500 handled Where Winds Meet perfectly, hitting a smooth 60 FPS with the Extremely High frame-rate option enabled. Just remember that with console-quality visuals come console-quality demands. This game has steep requirements, so your phone will get warm during extended sessions. And if you plan on maxing everything out at Ultra settings, also be prepared for your battery to drain pretty quickly.
