Having covered Grab‘s regional tech showcases over the past two years, most recently its AI-heavy GrabX summit in Indonesia, it’s easy to focus on the super-app’s latest tech innovations. But sometimes, the most useful updates solve simpler, everyday hassles — like figuring out who owes how much after a late-night ride home with friends.

Grab Philippines is addressing that exact problem by upgrading its GrabCar Group Ride feature, turning the awkward post-trip expense breakdown into an automated, in-app transaction.

The upgraded Group Ride tool allows a ride organizer and up to two companions to share a single GrabCar booking, with up to three drop-off points along the way. Instead of having one person pay the full fare upfront and chase everyone else for their share afterward, the Grab app now shows each passenger’s portion upfront and automatically splits the fare when the booking is confirmed.

According to Grab, the setup can cut individual travel costs by up to 50% compared with booking separate rides, making the most of the local hati-hati spirit while giving budget-conscious commuters a more affordable option, especially when fares are high during peak hours.

The update also introduces shortcuts for regular commuters. Users can now save their usual ride group, such as officemates heading home in the same direction after a shift, along with frequently used pickup and drop-off points for quicker bookings with just a few taps.

Grab is promoting the upgrade with a nostalgic video inspired by the catchy shampoo jingles of the 2000s, showing how easy it is to book a Group Ride

Grab is leaning into nostalgia to promote the rollout, branding the feature as “GrabCar 3-in-1” through a campaign inspired by the catchy shampoo sachet jingles of the 2000s. The feature speaks to familiar Filipino commuting habits. For friends heading home after a night out or colleagues sharing a ride after work, splitting one booking can make the trip more affordable while putting one vehicle to use for multiple passengers.

For those looking to try the updated feature, the process is built right into the Grab app. Open GrabCar, select Group Ride, enter your pickup point and destination, then share the invite link with up to two friends. They can add their own drop-off points before everyone confirms the booking. The app then displays each passenger’s share and automatically splits the fare, with savings of up to 50% per rider compared with booking separate solo rides.

The upgraded feature is now available in all GrabCar cities nationwide. As Grab continues to roll out broader AI-driven features, this update is a reminder that improving the user experience can also mean solving the small, everyday hassles that commuters deal with — starting with the familiar “Magkano share ko?” (“How much is my share?”) after a ride home.
