PH’s top phone brand is now in the telco business… sort of

Cherry Mobile has announced a partnership with Globe Telecom that will see the Philippines’ top phone brand foray into the cutthroat telecom business with the new Cherry Prepaid mobile service.

Similar to the network-sharing agreement ABS-CBN signed with Globe back in 2013, Cherry Prepaid will rely on the carrier’s existing infrastructure to offer telco services at affordable rates.

Except this time, consumers can also look forward to prepaid phone bundles that will retail for as low as P399. Cherry Prepaid SIM cards, meanwhile, will sell for P29 apiece and will allow users to make calls, send texts, and connect to the Internet over 2G or 3G data connections. I’m told 4G LTE services will likely be available sometime next year.

Similar to ABS-CBN Mobile, Cherry Prepaid will rely on Globe’s infrastructure to offer telco services at affordable rates.

Globe president and CEO Ernest Cu hopes the partnership will translate into new revenue opportunities and a stronger foothold in the fickle prepaid market. “Our brands Globe and TM [Touch Mobile] hit a very specific niche or market segment in terms of the population in the Philippines. We feel that Cherry Mobile will fill the gaps that we cannot cover,” Cu said.

ABS-CBN Mobile was apparently just the first step in Globe’s broader push into the prepaid segment. And while Globe stands to gain more subscribers from the collaboration, Cherry Mobile believes the move will smooth its transition into a company that has “everything for everyone.”

What Cherry Mobile has in mind apparently is a mobile-slash-quasi-telco outfit, which is interesting to say the least, as SIM cards these days are cheap and are sold in almost every store in the country.

Cherry Mobile believes the partnership will smooth its transition into a company that has ‘everything for everyone.’

The same can be said about prepaid phone offerings, which are widely available locally, including in convenience stores. If anything, the Cherry Prepaid bundles make for ideal options for first-time phone owners. Cherry Prepaid will be available in all Cherry Mobile stores and kiosks starting December 1.
