As expected, OPPO Philippines finally lifted the wraps off the first device in the F Series, the OPPO F1 — likely to the delight of selfie enthusiasts who are in the market for a competitively priced midrange smartphone.

After all, OPPO is marketing the F1 as the “Selfie Expert,” with its 8-megapixel front-facing camera module that fits an f/2.0 aperture lens. Well, that plus beautification software to make you look your best, even when you don’t feel it.

I’ve played with the device a bit, and while it’s hard to argue that the OPPO F1 takes the best possible selfies, it certainly is more than decent for social-media posting. And isn’t that the whole point? To show off our beautified mugs to our family, friends, and work colleagues? A local survey sponsored by OPPO found that 42 percent of Filipinos snap self-portraits to post on sites like Facebook and Instagram.

As for the rest of the hardware, you’ll be pleased to know that the F1’s finely crafted, almost all-metal body, as well as the innards that power the entire assembly, is equally above average. The octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 sytem-on-a-chip that serves as the brains of the phone is an improvement over the popular Snapdragon 615 chip found in the OPPO R7 Series, ASUS ZenFone Zoom, and Lenovo Vibe Shot, among others.

Available in golden and rose gold colors, the OPPO F1 retails for P11,990 — which is hardly a lot considering what you’re getting in return — and is now available in stores across the country.

It is also available under Smart Communications’ All-in Plan 1200 or for as low as P1,299 per month at 0 percent interest rate under Home Credit’s 6-month installment offer.
