OPPO’s first 18:9 smartphone is finally official in the Philippines more than a month after it was first teased by Filipino celebrities Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia. And the best part? Its price isn’t what we’ve come to expect from the brand.

The OPPO F5 costs only P15,990 or roughly $390 — P2,000 ($39) less than its closest competition, the Vivo V7+.

As we have mentioned several times in the past, the two devices look very much alike. You will have to look at them closely to see the differences, the most noticeable of which is the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. While Vivo’s is a squircle, the one on the newly launched OPPO is more of an oblong.

Unlike what the rumors said, the OPPO F5 doesn’t have dual cameras on either front or back. You get a 20-megapixel sensor up front and a 16-megapixel sensor round the back. What the company has focused on in this “selfie expert” model is artificial-intelligence or AI beauty-recognition technology.

What does it do? It recognizes your skin type and tone, your gender, and your age. It scans 200 facial-recognition spots and makes an analysis, so the device would know the kind of enhancement your image needs. The more you take photos, the more it learns about you. Talk about tailored enhancements, not same-for-all treatments.

The more you take photos, the more the OPPO F5 knows what kind of enhancement your image needs, thanks to its AI beauty-recognition technology.

You can check your pictures on its 6-inch wide display, which is already in full high-definition. Think 1080 x 2160. That kind of screen is ideal for watching videos and playing games, too.

Inside is a MediaTek Helio P23 processor clocked at 2.5GHz, which essentially makes the OPPO F5 the first smartphone in the Philippines to be powered by this recently launched, power-efficient chip. It’s also the second OPPO handset in the country to run Android Nougat after the OPPO A71 — but the first to get ColorOS 3.2.

There’s 4GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage and a 3,200mAh battery, too. You should see the OPPO F5’s complete specs by clicking on this.

You can preorder the phone till November 3, and get a limited-edition Olike speaker worth P2,990 ($58). Regular selling starts from November 4. Alternatively, you can also get the OPPO F5 from Smart Communications (Plan 599) and Globe Telecom (to be announced).
