Welcome to the flip side! Samsung has officially launched its fifth generation of foldable smartphones at the second Galaxy Unpacked event of the year.

(Update, October 16: There are new, bolder color variants of the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5!)

(Update, September 7: There’s a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 Thom Browne now as well, and here’s its price in the Philippines!)

Both the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 will be available in the Philippines starting August 18. Preorders begin today, July 26, and will end August 17, 2023. Those who preorder through official local channels can get as much as P42,000 (around $769 converted) worth of discounts, depending on the model. This includes free storage upgrades, as well as up to 50% off select Galaxy wearables, plus additional savings via trade-in offers.

In the Philippines, the Galaxy Z Flip5 is priced at P64,990 ($1,190) for 256GB of internal storage and P71,990 ($1,318) for the 512GB variant. Unlike with previous generations, there is no Flip model that starts with128GB of storage this year. The Galaxy Z Flip5 arrives in Cream, Graphite, Lavender, and the new Mint signature color. You can also purchase exclusive colorways at samsung.com, including Gray, Blue, Green, and Yellow.

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5, meanwhile, starts at P98,990 ($1,812) for the base 256GB storage variant. The 512GB and 1TB versions go for P105,990 ($1,941) and P119,990 ($2,197), respectively. Samsung’s full-size foldable comes in Icy Blue, Phantom Black, and Cream colors, but it’s also available in Gray and Blue colorways at samsung.com.

And just like the Galaxy S23 series, both foldables are powered by the higher-clocked Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 5G chipset for Galaxy devices.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5: Sammy’s best clamshell foldable yet

Samsung says the three things customers love most about the Galaxy Z Flip4 are its design, portability, and FlexCam mode. The new Galaxy Z Flip5 improves on all three, while also introducing some major changes to the cover screen, how it behaves, and how you interact with it. Which brings us to the biggest and most obvious change to the Flip formula this year.

The Galaxy Z Flip5’s 3.4-inch Super AMOLED cover screen is about double the size of its predecessor and stretches to about one-half of its rear. The larger display brings plenty of fresh features and interactions, including bigger and more useful widgets that can display more information, as well as the ability to pinch and zoom to view all your widgets at a glance. There’s also a new Messages widget that lets you reply to messages on the external display using a QWERTY keyboard.

To make it more durable, the cover screen is protected by the latest — and toughest — Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2, just like the back of the phone. The Galaxy Z Flip5 remains IPX8-rated for water resistance, meaning it is still safe for use around water in certain scenarios.

The other big change to the Flip formula is the hinge. Samsung’s new and improved Flex Hinge is thinner and has less parts compared to the previous release, allowing the Galaxy Z Flip5 to have a slimmer profile and fold flat when closed. The rest of the specs are similar to last year’s model, including the front and rear cameras, 3,700mAh battery, and 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X flexible display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 specs

  • 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X foldable display, 2,640 x 1,080 resolution, 120Hz refresh rate
  • 3.4-inch Super AMOLED cover display, 720 x 748 resolution, 60Hz refresh rate, Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5: More of the same

In stark contrast to its clamshell cousin, the new Samsung Galaxy Z Fold5 introduces fewer changes of its own, for better or worse. Right out of the box, you probably can’t tell the difference between a Galaxy Z Fold5 and its predecessor. It even shares similar dimensions to the Galaxy Z Fold4.

There’s still no place to slide in a stylus in the device’s body, whereas the S22 Ultra and S23 Ultra have a small S Pen embedded in them. To Samsung’s credit, though, the new S Pen for the Fold5 is much thinner than earlier designs and now slots in seamlessly at the back of the Slim S Pen Case.

Another (literal) bright spot is the 7.6-inch foldable display, which is about 30% brighter and can reach a max brightness of 1,750 nits. Also, the main screen now shows up to four recent apps in the taskbar for easier multitasking.

Similar to the Flip5, the Fold5 is engineered with a gap-less Flex Hinge, as well as Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front and back, making it more resistant to scratches. An IPX8 rating comes standard as well, so you don’t have to worry about accidentally dunking your phone in water.
