In a bit of a surprising move, Huawei has announced the successor to the Mate 50 series in China without much fanfare. No teaser campaign. No big event to showcase what the company’s latest flagship phone is capable of.

The newly launched Huawei Mate 60 series, which features the regular Mate 60 and Mate 60 Pro, is the industry’s first smartphone lineup that runs HarmonyOS 4.0 out of the box. According to China’s VMall ecommerce site, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro’s 12GB/512GB configuration carries a suggested retail price of ¥6,999 (about P54,489 or $960 converted). It’s also available in 256GB and 1TB flavors, priced at ¥6,499 (P50,602 or $891) and ¥7,999 (P62,285 or $1,097), respectively.

The Huawei Mate 60, on the other hand, starts at ¥5,499 (P42,810 or $754) for the base 12GB/256GB configuration, while the 12GB/512GB and 12GB/1TB models cost ¥5,999 (P46,703 or $823) and ¥6,999 (P54,489 or $960).

Both devices have identical designs and come in black, white, green, and purple colors — all with dual-tone back covers. The green and white colorways feature a glass upper section, while the black and purple units use faux leather for a more premium touch.

Huawei Mate 60 Pro

As expected, the Huawei Mate 60 Pro offers satellite messaging in its native China, but the big story here is the trio of camera cutouts on the front panel, which fits a 13-megapixel ultrawide selfie camera as well as sensors and lasers for the phone’s face-unlock feature. The 6.82-inch display uses LTPO technology to deliver better efficiency and can operate with a refresh rate as high as 120Hz or as low as 1Hz. It’s also slightly curved around the edges, which should make for a comfortable in-hand feel.

For regular pictures, you get a 50-megapixel main camera with optical image stabilization and an f/1.4 to f/4.0 variable aperture lens, just like the previous generation. The camera is joined by a 12-megapixel ultrawide shooter and a 48-megapixel tertiary option with an f/3.0 telephoto lens and OIS.

The 5,000mAh battery, meanwhile, supports 88-watt fast wired charging and 50-watt wireless charging. Huawei has yet to confirm the chipset of the Mate 60 Pro, but it is said to arrive with the company’s own Kirin 9000S processor with a unique 12-core architecture and a top clock speed of 2.62GHz.

  • 6.82-inch curved LTPO OLED screen, 2,720 x 1,260 resolution, 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rate, 300Hz touch-sampling rate, 1,440Hz PWM dimming, second-gen Kunlun Glass

The vanilla model has a smaller flat display, measuring 6.69 inches across. Additionally, the screen bezels are impressively narrow on all four sides. It’s an LTPO panel, too, so the refresh rate can go down to 1Hz to save battery. At the back, the Mate packs a triple-camera setup with a 50-megapixel primary shooter alongside a pair of 12-megapixel sensors for ultrawide and zoom shots. Unlike the Pro variant, its 13-megapixel selfie camera sits in a single punch hole.

Another notable difference between the two models is the battery and its charging speed. The Huawei Mate 60 ships with a smaller 4,750mAh battery that allows for fast wired charging up to 66 watts. Quick wireless charging up to 50 watts is also onboard. The company doesn’t list the chipset of the Huawei Mate 60 on its website.
