Sony PlayStation 5 ‘Slim’ announced: What you need to know

If you’re thinking of buying a PS5 console soon, you might want to hold off on that thought. Sony announced a new PlayStation 5 model — or PS5 Slim, as a lot of people will call it — which is more compact and slimmer than the original.

The announcement continues the Japanese company’s trend of releasing a sleeker hardware revision of its current console, dating all the way back to the OG Sony PS1. The upcoming model actually looks significantly smaller than the PS5 we have now while retaining the power — and, perhaps more importantly, price — of the baseline system.

Sony says the PlayStation 5 Slim will replace the standard PS5 entirely. It is due to hit the United States sometime in November, just in time for the holiday season, at these prices:

  • PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive: $499.99 (around P28,356 converted)
  • PS5 Digital Edition: $449.99 (P25,520)

And, yes, the Philippines will also get the Sony PS5 Slim, hopefully at some point in the near future. Gaming retailer DataBlitz has shared the news of the updated PS5 console, hinting at its local release. The new PS5 “will continue to roll out globally in the following months,” according to the official PlayStation Blog.

The PS5 Slim is said to be 30% smaller than the original and weighs 18% and 24% less compared to the digital and disc versions of the PlayStation 5, respectively. It comes with four separate cover panels, and the top panels are now glossy instead of sporting a matte finish. You get two USB-C ports on the front, as opposed to one USB-A port and a USB-C.

Sony will also give you the option to purchase the Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive add-on module for the new PS5 Digital Edition for $79.99 (P4,536), should you want to upgrade to a Blu-ray drive down the line. Additionally, Sony announced a $29.99 (P1,700) vertical stand that’s sold separately and compatible with the old and new models of the PS5, but you can also use the bundled horizontal stand, which will ship with the PS5 Slim if you don’t want to scratch the exterior of your console.
