For the last few release cycles, MyNBA players like us have had to sit on the sidelines while other game modes in NBA 2K received all the attention. But developer Visual Concepts is finally changing the game plan with NBA 2K27. MyNBA is getting a substantial overhaul, proving the classic franchise experience isn’t dead just yet.
At the center of this overhaul is MyNBA Legacy. And while controlling a single player on the court is nothing new to the franchise, NBA 2K27 takes that basic premise and introduces an RPG-style progression system. So instead of just playing seasons locked to one athlete, you manage their entire career trajectory up to the “Eternal GOAT tier.” You can take a current superstar, revert them to their rookie stats, and chase down their real-world statistical milestones to earn XP. That XP buys training camps to fight off age regression or unlocks unique front-office abilities, like signing players on minimum contracts to save cap space and build a deeper roster.
On a related note, the developers are tightening the simulation mechanics this time around. The franchise mode now includes the 2023 CBA rules, the second apron, and a dynamic morale system where relationships impact on-court performance. Strong friendships create stat-boosting dynamic duos, while playoff rivalries can make players start games hot with a grudge. And for the true simulation obsessives, the save file limit has been pushed from 80 to 100 years.

More notably, the changes to MyNBA carry over to MyCAREER, the franchise’s story mode. NBA 2K27 introduces MyCAREER Eras, taking the excellent historical concept from the franchise mode and dropping your custom MyPLAYER right into the middle of it. And you’re not limited to the modern NBA either. You can step into the Magic vs. Bird era, the Jordan era, or the LeBron era. This essentially turns the barbershop debate of “who is the greatest” into a playable campaign where you can team up with Allen Iverson to stop the Lakers’ three-peat or help The Heatles win more rings for the Heat.
If you prefer the modern timeline, this year’s MyCAREER narrative — dubbed “Fire and Concrete” — takes you on an 11-chapter grind from high school hoops all the way through the G-League.
The story mode supports co-op, too. You get a running mate named Trace, and a friend can actually drop in and play as him. They even earn their own VC and season XP while you play together, which is huge. If they log off, Trace simply switches back to an AI. It completely flips the dynamic of the mode, turning what used to feel like a solo chore into an actual shared campaign.
Between improving the mechanics of MyNBA and opening up MyCAREER to both co-op and historical timelines, NBA 2K27 feels like a game stepping back onto the hardwood with something to prove.
NBA 2K27 launches globally on Sept. 4 for the Sony PlayStation 5, Microsoft Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC, leaving older last-gen hardware behind.
