While other devices rely on minor hardware updates and slight camera tweaks, Xiaomi decided to take a different approach, adding a huge battery that’s hard to overlook on the spec sheet.
By packing a giant 10,000mAh cell alongside high-end screen specifications, the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G smartly positions itself as a marathon champ in a field populated mostly by sprinters. It’s a highly specialized piece of hardware designed for a specific type of user. That said, if you’re sick of hunting for outlets or lugging around bulky power banks, this might just be the daily driver for you. Just remember that prioritizing extreme battery life comes at the cost of other features.

Our time with the device started early on a typical chaotic Monday morning in Metro Manila. We slipped the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G into one of our jeans pockets as we headed out to cover the first-ever NBA House event in the Philippines last month. It was a major gathering, serving double duty as the official announcement of Salmon coming on board as a local partner of NBA Philippines.
A 10,000mAh battery probably makes you picture a literal brick — thick, unwieldy, and heavy enough to weigh down your pants. Yet, the reality of handling this handset is surprisingly different. Xiaomi’s engineering team somehow managed to keep the weight down to 230 grams — lighter than the Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max — and the thickness to an impressively slim 8.6mm. They achieved this by using a flat design and a plastic middle frame that, while not made of premium metal, feels well put together. It’s really comfortable to hold and use on the go, avoiding the top-heavy awkwardness that plagues a lot of oversized phones.
Our review unit came in Purple, but there’s also a Cloud Blush colorway that uses photochromic technology. Take it out into the sunlight, and the back panel transforms from a clean white to a warm pink-orange.
Navigating a busy, crowded event like NBA House means your gear is constantly at risk of being bumped, dropped, or spilled on. The durability features integrated here brought some peace of mind. Clad in Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the front display and boasting IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings for water and dust resistance, the build feels ready for the unpredictable elements of field coverage. There’s even a dedicated underwater camera mode built into the software.
Walking through the venue, the ambient noise was deafening — sneakers squeaking on the pop-up courts, baseline bass from the DJ booth, and the constant hum of a packed crowd. During a quick breather away from the main stage, we tested the audio capabilities. The dual-speaker setup pushed an unexpected amount of volume, aided by Dolby Atmos tuning.

Framing shots on the 6.83-inch AMOLED display felt great. Peaking at 3,500 nits of brightness, the screen remained perfectly legible under the harsh, multicolored spotlights of the event stage. Meanwhile, the 120Hz refresh rate made scrolling through social feeds and event schedules feel smooth, and the narrow bezels made streaming YouTube clips and TikTok reels highly immersive.
For photos, the 50-megapixel main sensor, equipped with optical image stabilization, took sharp, vibrant photos of the event booths and the program itself. The autofocus was fast, locking onto moving subjects quickly, while the color science leaned toward the saturated look that translates well onto social media.
However, the lack of a telephoto lens became glaringly obvious quickly. When trying to capture tight shots of the guests, executives, and basketball legends on stage, we really missed having lossless zoom. Relying on digital zoom degrades image quality, turning faces into processed oil paintings the moment you push past 2x magnification.

For a smartphone carrying the “Pro Max” moniker — a label usually reserved for the peak of a company’s camera technology — a telephoto camera would have rounded out the setup nicely. Adding just one decent optical zoom lens would have elevated the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G into a formidable all-around option.
On the software front, the handset boots Xiaomi’s latest HyperOS 3.0 skin, built on top of Android 16. The user interface is clean, though it clearly takes heavy inspiration from Cupertino.
One of the standout UI features is called Hyper Island, Xiaomi’s direct response to Apple’s Dynamic Island. It pops down from the camera cutout to serve up handy quick shortcuts for ongoing timers, incoming calls, and media playback. It’s derivative, sure, but it’s also useful. Xiaomi has likewise leveled up its ecosystem interconnectivity this time around; you can now seamlessly share files and mirror your screen not just with Windows PCs, but with iOS devices like iPhones and iPads as well.
During downtimes between press briefings, we fired up a few mobile games to push the 4nm Qualcomm Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 chipset. While we ran more intensive, controlled benchmarks over the weeks that followed, those quick gaming sessions at the venue proved the silicon handles sustained loads incredibly well. We ran Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, Call of Duty: Mobile, and PUBG Mobile, achieving 60 to 90 frames per second with excellent stability. There’s a catch, though: Xiaomi claims the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G features lightning-fast UFS 4.0 storage, but because of the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5’s hardware limitations, read and write speeds cap out at UFS 3.1 levels. It’s a quirky bottleneck that power users should be aware of, even if it doesn’t noticeably impact day-to-day use.
Despite that storage quirk, the thermal management is where this chipset truly shines. Because the processor is so efficient and restrained, it stays cool under pressure. In our controlled stress tests later in the week, it scored a near-perfect 99% on the 3DMark Wild Life Extreme GPU stress test. It simply refuses to overheat.
Beyond gaming and photography, the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G proved to be an impeccable workhorse. We kept it running as a mobile hotspot for our laptop for over an hour to publish a quick story, and relied on its GPS to navigate the notorious Makati traffic, booking Grab cars to and from the venue without any issues. However, we noticed that our unit would sometimes inexplicably drop its connection to our home Wi-Fi network — an issue we haven’t experienced with any of our other devices.
The longest-lasting phone we’ve tested, period
As the afternoon wrapped up and the crowd emptied out, we finally settled into the back of a Grab car and checked the battery gauge on our way home. We had unplugged the phone from the wall at 92% that morning. After a grueling, relentless schedule of taking high-res photos and videos, sustained mobile gaming, hotspot sharing, constant social media refreshing, and keeping the screen at near-maximum brightness for hours on end, the meter still read 54%.
For our usual daily driver, that kind of workload would have required a mid-afternoon top-up just to guarantee we could order a ride home. With this device, getting two full, unrestricted days of heavy use with juice to spare isn’t just a marketing claim; it’s entirely possible.
To put that sheer endurance into perspective, our REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G clocked over 27 hours in the PCMark battery-rundown test. To be clear, that is the longest result we have ever recorded from any smartphone to date. During our testing period, it completely changed how we interacted with our unit. We stopped checking the battery percentage entirely. We stopped carrying cables in our backpacks. We stopped calculating whether watching a 20-minute YouTube video on the commute would leave us stranded without Maps later. We really wish we could enjoy this kind of endurance in all the phones we use daily.
And when that giant silicon-carbon cell finally does flatline, you aren’t left waiting around tethered to a wall for half the day. Xiaomi thoughtfully includes a 100-watt fast charger and cable right in the retail box. Plugging it in takes the battery from 0% to 100% in about 80 minutes. Given the size of the battery, that fast charging speed is essential for getting you moving again quickly.

The REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G knows what it is — and it makes no apologies for the compromises it asks you to accept. It’s a highly specialized tool built for a specific audience that values endurance above all else. It omits a telephoto lens and skips the raw computing power you might find in similarly priced flagship killers. If you’re an amateur photographer looking for the best camera setup in this price bracket, or a hardcore mobile gamer who demands higher frame rates, this is probably not the phone for you.
What it lacks in versatility, it makes up for with an absurd battery life, a nice AMOLED display, and an efficient gaming experience wrapped in a relatively slim chassis.
