Nostalgia remains a powerful force in the camera world, and Yashica is expertly tapping into its rich archives to bring its beloved classics back to life. Hot on the heels of the viral FUNtastic keychain camera craze, the historic imaging brand is now dipping back into its mid-century archives for the upcoming Yashica Y16 Pocket Camera, a 12-megapixel digital reimagining of a very niche 16mm film shooter from 1959.

While the price hasn’t been announced yet, it is expected to be revealed ahead of its October preorder window. For context on where this might sit, most of Yashica’s current digital lineup retails for under roughly ₱18,740 ($300), with some entry-level models positioned below ₱6,247 ($100), while its most expensive offering tops out at around ₱26,174 ($419). As of writing, we haven’t seen Philippine retailers like Henry’s Cameras tease this yet, so we don’t know if it will officially be released locally.

The Yashica Y16 Pocket Camera preserves the compact size and approachable character of its mid-century ancestor. According to photography outlets, it retains the original’s slim, rectangular shape and large knurled control dial. The original 1959 model was a quirky subminiature camera that shot tiny 10x14mm negatives, but its 2026 reincarnation swaps film for a 12-megapixel sensor capable of capturing both photos and video. Yashica is leaning heavily into the “everyday carry” lifestyle angle here, framing the Y16 as an intentional, stylish pocket companion rather than a high-fidelity mirrorless replacement.

The most interesting hardware choice for us is the inclusion of a 3-level xenon flash system. Unlike the weak, continuous LED lamps often slapped onto today’s budget novelty cameras, a real xenon strobe produces a short, intensely bright burst of light, which Yashica notes will give users greater creative flexibility across a variety of lighting conditions. The brand has also included an optical viewfinder enhanced by motion-sensing technology, alongside a small rear display for reviewing your shots. It’s a purposeful blend of retro framing and modern convenience.

Yashica expects to open preorders for the Y16 Pocket Camera in October, with the first deliveries scheduled for early November. Like the original 1959 release, it will be available in seven distinct color options to suit different personalities.

Here are the confirmed specs of the Yashica Y16 Pocket Camera so far:

  • Sensor: 12 megapixels
  • Capture modes: Still photos and video
  • Flash: 3-level built-in xenon flash system
  • Viewfinder: Optical viewfinder enhanced by motion-sensing technology
  • Display: Small rear screen for image review
  • Colors: Seven distinctive color options
