The smartphone camera wars are getting a cinematic upgrade. HONOR has officially locked in Sept. 28 for the launch of the HONOR Magic9 Series in China, and early details paint a picture of a flagship leaning heavily into mobile filmmaking and high-end photography.

Fresh off the heels of the gimbal-toting HONOR Robot Phone, the company is bringing some of that same heavy-hitting optical DNA to its mainstream flagship. The biggest talking point is the deep integration with German cinema camera legend ARRI, which looks poised to transform the Magic9 lineup into a pocketable cinema rig.

HONOR first teased the Magic9’s redesign during its recent Robot Phone presentation, showcasing a deliberate shift away from the centralized camera ring of previous generations. Teasers reveal a circular camera module repositioned to the upper-left corner of the rear panel. It’s an unapologetically large bump that mimics the aesthetic of a professional cinema camera, complete with prominent ARRI branding and a premium metal frame.

Underneath that redesigned glass, the hardware sounds staggering. According to a Weibo leak detailing the upcoming launch, the HONOR Magic9 Series will pack a dual 200-megapixel camera system designed to cover multiple focal lengths without losing detail.

The primary shooter is tipped to feature a 1/1.28-inch sensor with a fast f/1.57 aperture and 3-degree optical image stabilization (OIS) to keep handheld shots locked in. Joining the main camera is a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto lens with a 1/1.4-inch sensor and an f/2.6 aperture, giving users high-resolution reach for both stills and video.

But for us imaging enthusiasts, what makes this setup interesting is the ARRI collaboration. The partnership is expected to bring professional-grade color science to the device, unlocking features like ARRI LogC3 recording, ARRI Look profiles, and a dedicated cinematic movie mode. For creators, this means vastly improved dynamic range, true-to-life film coloring, and video capabilities engineered specifically to rival the Apple iPhone’s ProRes ecosystem.

Beyond the optics, the leak confirms the HONOR Magic9 Series will be powered by Qualcomm’s upcoming Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 2nm chipset. The brand is also seemingly catering to the creator crowd by shifting to 1.5K flat OLED displays across the entire lineup. Ditching the curved edges makes precise video editing, color grading, and framing significantly easier when working directly on the phone.

It is clear that HONOR isn’t just playing the spec-sheet game this year, as it is directly targeting the booming creator economy. By combining a redesigned, video-first flat display with oversized 200-megapixel sensors and ARRI’s legendary color-grading tools, the Magic9 Series is shaping up to be a serious tool for mobile content creation.
