The 2nm race has finally hit the Android ecosystem. While Apple already beat the rest of the industry to the punch by getting 2nm silicon into the hands of consumers, MediaTek seems poised to lead the charge on the other side of the mobile landscape.
The Taiwanese company has taken the wraps off the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro, its newest flagship chipset. And in a coordinated move that probably surprised no one who follows the smartphone release cycle, OPPO stepped up to claim first dibs.
Built on a bleeding-edge TSMC 2nm process, the Dimensity 9600 Pro promises the usual holy grail of mobile technology: significant efficiency gains and faster raw speeds. MediaTek claims the new architecture delivers a 17% bump in single-core performance while slashing multicore power consumption by up to a whopping 61%.
The AI and graphics leaps are equally impressive on paper. The chip features an improved dual-NPU architecture designed to run complex 30-billion parameter generative AI models directly on the device — all while cutting always-on power draw by 40%.

On the gaming front, the processor relies on the new Mali-G2 Ultra NX GPU. With a 27% boost to peak performance and 18% faster ray tracing, MediaTek clearly aims to push mobile games closer to console quality. That ambition checks out with what we’re seeing on the ground, as more and more PC and console titles are officially — and successfully — ported to Android. Just boot up the Android version of the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot on a modern flagship to see it in action; the performance and graphical fidelity are pretty staggering.
In related news, OPPO has also confirmed that its upcoming Find X10 Pro Max will be the world’s first smartphone powered by the new chipset. Over on the OPPO newsroom, the company is leaning hard into how the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro’s power efficiency will complement its latest high-density battery tech. The brand also dropped some hints about next-gen computational photography, which will inevitably rely on the chip’s powerful NPU to process high-res images on the fly.
Xiaomi and vivo are expected to follow suit shortly with their own devices built around the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro. But the real battle begins later this month when Qualcomm unveils its own 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 at Snapdragon Summit 2026.
