MediaTek just introduced the Dimensity 9600M, keeping much of the hardware familiar while changing what the chip can do with AI. It builds on the foundation of the Dimensity 9500, but adds newer AI and system-management tools that give the platform a fresh role in the company’s flagship lineup.
That might sound less exciting than a clean-sheet processor, but there’s something refreshingly practical about the approach. In a smartphone market where every new silicon arrives with another acronym and a bigger AI promise, MediaTek is betting that smarter software can extend the life — and usefulness — of hardware that’s already fast.
Under the hood, the MediaTek Dimensity 9600M keeps the same TSMC 3nm process and octa-core CPU configuration as the Dimensity 9500, led by a single Arm C1-Ultra core clocked at up to 4.21GHz. It also retains the Mali-G1 Ultra MC12 GPU, LPDDR5X memory support, and UFS 4.1 storage.
So no, this isn’t about chasing a big jump in raw benchmark scores. The hardware is already firmly in flagship territory. The bigger change is what MediaTek is doing with it.

The AI is where things get interesting
The Dimensity 9600M adds MediaTek’s newer Agentic AI Engine and Dimensity Scheduling Engine 3.0, giving the platform a more capable software layer without requiring a completely new CPU or GPU design.
The chipset can run newer on-device AI models, including Gemini Nano 4, and supports features such as native text-to-image generation. The scheduling system is also designed to coordinate processing more intelligently across the CPU, GPU, and memory, particularly when a smartphone is juggling demanding tasks.
That makes the MediaTek Dimensity 9600M less about raw silicon bragging rights and more about getting additional mileage from a familiar foundation. For phone makers, it offers a way to bring newer AI capabilities to premium devices while keeping the underlying platform highly capable and proven.
If you want the Taiwanese company’s full hardware reset, that’s where the MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro comes in. The Pro moves to TSMC’s 2nm process, introduces a new CPU and GPU architecture, and supports newer memory and storage standards. The MediaTek Dimensity 9600M occupies a different lane. It’s expected to power premium smartphones such as the standard vivo X500 and OPPO Find X10, where its familiar 3nm foundation can be paired with the chip manufacturer’s newer AI capabilities. And that’s arguably the appeal. Not every new handset needs a radically different processor to feel new. Sometimes, the smarter move is to take hardware that’s already fast, teach it some new tricks, and let the software do more of the heavy lifting.
