In Government, Laptops by Alora Uy GuerreroLeave a Comment

The days of Philippine public school teachers footing the bill for their own classroom laptops are getting a Silicon Valley-sized upgrade. In a landmark move for the country’s education sector, the Department of Education (DepEd) is rolling out more than 172,000 Apple MacBook Neo units to educators and administrative staff nationwide, marking a significant leap forward in modernizing the tools used for teaching and school operations.

DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara emphasized that the initiative aims to change the long-standing narrative of teachers shouldering the personal and financial burden of buying and maintaining outdated technology just to keep their lesson plans afloat.

Through a competitive bidding process under the DepEd Computerization Program, the government secured 172,654 MacBook Neo units at approximately ₱43,000 (roughly $735) each. That’s a considerable discount compared with the laptop’s standard Philippine retail price of ₱49,990 ($855).

What’s more, DepEd successfully negotiated a five-year warranty for every unit. In a space where devices can become costly to maintain once standard one-year coverage expires, this extended protection offers peace of mind and helps ensure the laptops can withstand the demands of everyday classroom use for years to come. The package also covers delivery and includes productivity tools, making the MacBook Neos virtually ready to use right out of the box.

The announcement

The sheer scale of this rollout didn’t just make local headlines; it also caught the attention of Apple‘s top executives in Cupertino. During the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, CEO John Ternus specifically highlighted the Philippine agreement, calling it Apple’s biggest education deal ever for the Mac. He pointed to the deployment of more than 170,000 units as an example of their growing momentum in emerging markets and the education sector.

Recognizing that great hardware is only part of the equation, DepEd is also partnering directly with Apple to launch GuroXL. This co-designed training framework, delivered through the National Educators Academy of the Philippines, will help teachers pursue official Apple Teacher Certifications and technology leadership credentials. It’s a more holistic approach that empowers educators to make the most of their new devices instead of having to figure everything out on their own.

Overall, DepEd’s latest technology push has awarded contracts for more than 231,000 laptops, including 169,008 Macs and 62,717 Windows devices for teachers, along with additional MacBook Neo units for administrative personnel. Deployment across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao is scheduled from November 2026 through March 2027.

Complete with interactive teacher unboxing sessions, the rollout represents a welcome step forward in giving public school educators not just better hardware, but also the training and support they need to use it effectively. After all, teachers should be able to focus on shaping the next generation, not worrying about whether their classroom technology can keep up.
