REMEMBER that interesting smartphone with a second, 2-inch AMOLED screen on the back? The one that we wrote about in this article: Meizu Pro 7 review: Excellent from front to back? Well, it’s officially in the Philippines, bringing with it its bigger sibling, the Meizu Pro 7 Plus.

The two share the same set of cameras — a 12-megapixel, dual-lens system that you can use to take bokeh shots and a front-facing 16-megapixel sensor with f/2.0 aperture lens. They also come in attractive metal bodies (red version, anyone?) and feature special audio chips for better-quality sound and support for high-res audio formats such as FLAC.

But while the Meizu Pro 7 sports a 5.2-inch display with 1080p resolution and a 3,000mAh battery, the Meizu Pro 7 Plus packs a 5.7-inch screen with 1440p or quad-HD resolution and a 3,500mAh cell.

Underneath the hood of the smaller variant is an octa-core MediaTek Helio P25 chip paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It costs P22,990 or roughly $452 in the Philippines. On the other hand, the Plus model that’s available here is powered by a deca-core Helio X30 silicon — the first smartphone to use the processor, by the way — coupled with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in memory. That one has a price tag of P31,990 or about $629.

It’s great to see the latest Meizu products in the country, especially after Novo7 Tech, its previous distributor, closed down last year. Xing Yu has taken up the cudgels on Meizu’s behalf, so to speak. And it’s bullish on its prospects.

From Xing Yu’s current sales personnel of more than 100 and presence in 150 retail locations in the Philippines, the aim is to have 300 to 350 sales personnel and 500 locations by end-2017. The target is 1,500 stores by end-2018.

Xing Yu has also promised that the country won’t be left behind when it comes to new Meizu phones. In fact, the Philippines will be one of Meizu’s resources for product research and development.

“Meizu is here in the Philippines, and we are here to stay,” Ian Braza of Xing Yu has vowed.
