THIS just in: The Huawei Nova 2i, the smartphone the Chinese brand has been teasing these past few weeks, is official in the Philippines. And its surprise, sudden entrance — or, okay, announcement — is nothing short of something worthy of a superstar. It got us to sit up and take notice because of its palatable price of just P14,990 or roughly $292.

For that amount, you’re getting an 18:9, nearly borderless screen that measures 5.9 inches and has 1080 x 2160 resolution, higher than the Vivo V7+ selfie phone‘s 720 x 1440 pixels. You’re also getting four cameras — 13 and 2 megapixels on the front and 16 and 2 megapixels round the back.

The Huawei Nova 2i is powered by the company’s own octa-core Kirin 659 system-on-a-chip paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. It features a 3,340mAh battery and runs EMUI 5.1 on top of Android Nougat.

If you buy the smartphone on October 21, its first day of availability, you get a free JBL Flip 3 splash-proof portable speaker worth P6,495 ($127). But you must go to these participating branches:

  • Huawei Experience Store SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City
  • Huawei Experience Store SM North EDSA, Quezon City
  • Huawei Experience Store SM City Cebu, Cebu City
  • Huawei Experience Store Ayala Mall Cebu, Cebu City
  • Huawei Experience Store SM City Bacolod, Bacolod City
  • Huawei Experience Store SM Ecoland, Davao City

You can find the full mechanics on this page.

Huawei was absent in IDC’s top 5 smartphone vendors in the Philippines in the second quarter of 2017. There’s a chance that the Nova 2i could help put the company back into the quarterly ranking — at least in the last quarter of this year.
