It’s here. Xiaomi’s third smartphone from the series that helped launched handsets with tall displays has been made official in Shanghai, China. And it’s out to impress.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S is the company’s first device to use Snapdragon 845. Qualcomm’s chip is paired with 6GB and 8GB of RAM and 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB of internal memory.

The phone is also the first in the MIX lineup to get an OLED screen. And true enough, the 5.99-inch display is nearly borderless and the bezels, small. But contrary to some rumors, the unit has no corner notch; the 8-megapixel front camera is placed at the bottom bezel, just like that on the Mi MIX 2.

Another first for the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S: wireless charging. It supports the Qi industry standard with 7.5W charging. It even has its own charging pad, which you can get for a measly price of ¥99 (around P827 or $16).

But the biggest news to come out of the smartphone’s launch — at least if you still care about camera benchmarks — is that the Mi MIX 2S ties with the Apple iPhone X on DxOMark. Which means it’s also on equal footing with the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. This puts the device in third place after the Samsung Galaxy S9+ and the Google Pixel 2.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S got a score of 97, with a 101 photo rating and 88 video score.

As with the iPhone X, this MIX has vertically arranged two cameras at the back. The main one is a 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor that has a pixel size larger than that of the Mi MIX 2. It’s coupled with another 12-megapixel sensor, one that has a telephoto lens and a 2x optical zoom.

The Huawei P20 series — headlined by a triple-rear-camera phone — will be announced today, too. So we are expecting the ranking on DxOMArk to change later.

The cheapest Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S — the model with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage — goes for ¥3,299 (P27,516 or $525). The variant with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable space costs ¥3,599 (P30,018 or $573). And the highest-specced version that matches 8GB of RAM and 256GB of memory is priced at ¥3,999 (P33,354 or $637). The Mi wireless charging pad already comes free with the latter.

You have two colors to choose from: Black and Ceramic White. It will go on sale in China on April 3. Unfortunately, there’s no word yet on when it’s rolling out to the international market, including the Philippines.
