Beijing-based Smartisan is a fairly new player in the mobile industry; it released its first smartphone only in 2014. However, it’s already out to make a name for itself this early, as it launched the world’s first handset with 1TB of internal memory. Ladies and gentlemen, you’re looking at the Smartisan R1.

Smartisan R1, the world’s first smartphone with as much as 1TB of storage, has adopted the notch design of the Essential Phone.

Yes, the device has embraced the notch, but the kind that may not obtrusive for some of you. Instead of the Apple iPhone X-like cutout on its screen, we get something similar to the one on the Essential Phone or Essential PH-1. The small notch houses a 24-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture and AI real-time beauty mode, while a slit makes room for the earpiece.

The front design leads to a screen-to-bezel ratio of 84 percent, which is about the same as those of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. The 6.17-inch display itself, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, has a 2,242 x 1,080 resolution and an 18.7:9 aspect ratio.

The Smartisan R1’s back is covered in 3D glass, and on it are dual cameras. A 12-megapixel Sony IMX363 sensor with f/1.8 aperture is supported by a 20-megapixel Sony IMX350 unit with f/1.75 aperture. Further down the panel is a fingerprint sensor that’s covered by the company’s logo.

The phone supports Quick Charge 4+, so charging its 3,600mAh battery should be fast. You may also charge the R1 wirelessly.

To keep the Smartisan OS-powered Smartisan R1 humming, the Chinese manufacturer opted for a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor clocked at 2.8GHz and coupled with an Adreno 630 GPU.

Not bad, huh? So the 1TB of memory is not really the smartphone’s only come-on. Honestly, we don’t know how we’d fill up that humongous storage; we’ve barely used up the 64GB space of our six-month-old phone until now. Then again, we understand that there are those who’d need more space. Plus, the Smartisan R1 has memory configurations other than the one with 1TB. We’ve listed them with their respective prices below:

  1. 6GB RAM + 64GB: ¥3,499 (around P28,694 or $549)
  2. 6GB RAM + 128GB: ¥3,999 (P32,795 or $628)
  3. 8GB RAM + 128GB: ¥4,499 (P36,895 or $706)
  4. 8GB RAM + 1TB: ¥8,848 (P72,560 or $1,389)

Liking what you see? Unfortunately, the Smartisan R1 is not officially available in the Philippines. You can only find it on this page at Smartisan’s website and at online retailer JD.com at this time. So it’s up to you if you want to take the risk of buying one.
