Just as expected, Xiaomi has made the Redmi S2 — leaked in its full glory less than two weeks ago — official today, May 10.

Call it the Redmi Note 5‘s younger sibling; the two certainly share the same design language. It’s just that the antenna lines on the Xiaomi Redmi S2 is reminiscent of the ones on phones like the Vivo V7 and V7+. Plus, the highlight here is also mobile photography — particularly on capturing selfies, in this case.

The leaked images on Svet Androida turn out to be real

The handset gets a 16-megapixel front camera sensor with 2μm pixel size and an LED flash. Being artificial intelligence-assisted, it has an AI portrait mode for those shots with bokeh effect. There’s also an AI beauty mode.

According to the company, the S2 is its best Redmi device for selfies, ever. Now, for Xiaomi to say that… well, the smartphone must be something else. We wonder if it’s just all marketing or if it’s for real indeed. This makes us want to review the Xiaomi Redmi S2 all the more.

According to Xiaomi, the Redmi S2 is the Chinese company’s best Redmi device for selfies — ever.

At the back of the handset is a 12-megapixel primary camera with 1.25μm pixel size paired with a 5-megapixel one for depth effect.

Available in Rose Gold, Champagne Gold, and Platinum Silver, the Redmi S2 also gets a 5.99-inch screen with 1,440 × 720 resolution and and 18:9 aspect ratio and a 3,080mAh battery. On top of Android 8.1 Oreo is Xiaomi’s own MIUI 9.0.

At the heart of the smartphone is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 processor that’s paired with two memory configurations:

  • 3GB RAM with 32GB storage: Price – ¥999 (around P8,190 or $157)
  • 4GB RAM with 64GB storage: Price – ¥1,299 yuan (P10,650 or $205)

This makes the device within the same price range as the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus.

Will the Xiaomi Redmi S2 make its way to the Philippines? We have a feeling it will, considering that several reports say we’re one of the selfie capitals of the world.
