Xiaomi has wasted no time putting Qualcomm’s newest smartphone silicon to work.

The Xiaomi 18 Pro and Xiaomi 18 Pro Max are the world’s first smartphone series powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 family, with the two models debuting in China alongside the chips themselves. The company also confirmed that the lineup is coming to global markets this year.

That makes this more than a routine flagship refresh. Xiaomi gets first crack at the chip maker’s new 2nm platform, while bringing back the rear display from last year’s Pro phones and adding a new hardware-level privacy feature that can make your screen harder for people beside you to see.

And there’s a rather dramatic “one more thing” at the end: two Transparent Special Edition models with a red, see-through-inspired finish.

For the Philippine market, the biggest news may simply be that these phones are coming here. Xiaomi Philippines teased the 18 Pro Series with a “Kumusta?” message on the rear display and confirmed that the devices will arrive in the country this year. A local launch date and Philippine prices have yet to be announced.

For now, here’s what Xiaomi is offering in China:

The headline hardware change is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 platform. The Xiaomi 18 Pro gets the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, while the Pro Max model gets the more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Both chips are built on a 2nm process and use the American chipset manufacturer’s latest Oryon CPU, Adreno GPU, and Hexagon NPU.

The difference between the two models goes beyond screen size, too. The Xiaomi 18 Pro has a 6.4-inch LTPO AMOLED display with a 1,120 x 2,436 resolution, while the Pro Max stretches to 6.9 inches at 1,208 x 2,624. Both run at up to 120Hz and can reach a claimed 4,000 nits of peak brightness.

But Xiaomi has another trick up its sleeve: Privacy Display. The technology is built into the screen rather than relying on a physical privacy filter. It can narrow viewing angles so people sitting beside you have a harder time reading what’s on the display. Xiaomi also designed it to work with specific apps and notifications, making it more useful than simply turning the entire screen into a dimmer, harder-to-view panel.

That’s the sort of feature that sounds niche until you’re checking your banking app on a crowded MRT train.

Privacy Display

Then there are the screens you can actually see from behind. Both units have a small secondary display integrated into the rear camera area. The standard edition gets a 2.7-inch panel, while the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max gets a 2.9-inch version. The brand has made the rear screen more useful than a simple clock or notification panel, with support for widgets, controls, and other interactive functions. It can also serve as a viewfinder when taking photos with the main cameras.

Flip the phone around, frame yourself on the rear display, and use the much more capable rear cameras for selfies instead of settling for the front-facing shooter.

Speaking of cameras, Xiaomi isn’t playing it safe here either. The Xiaomi 18 Pro and Xiaomi 18 Pro Max have Leica-branded triple-camera systems built around a 200-megapixel main camera, a 200-megapixel telephoto, and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide. There’s also a 50-megapixel front-facing camera.

The 200-megapixel telephoto is particularly interesting. Rather than treating high-resolution sensors as a numbers game, the company is using one for the zoom camera as well, giving the phones plenty of resolution to work with when shooting distant subjects.

The battery story is even more straightforward. The Xiaomi 18 Pro packs a 7,000mAh battery, while the Pro Max goes all the way to 8,500mAh. Both support 100-watt wired charging. The two also support 50-watt wireless charging and 27-watt reverse charging. That is a lot of battery for devices that are also bringing 2nm flagship silicon to the table. Xiaomi is clearly betting that buyers would rather have extra capacity than chase ever-thinner phones.

Both models come with 12GB or 16GB of RAM and up to 1TB of storage. They run Xiaomi HyperOS 4 based on Android 17 and have an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor built into the display. IP68 and IP69K ratings provide protection against dust and water.

Then Xiaomi pulled its one more thing. As mentioned earlier, the Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max Transparent Special Editions come in a striking red finish designed to give the phones the appearance of a transparent back. The effect uses a textured, layered treatment that creates a three-dimensional look, while custom wallpapers reveal stylized representations of the smartphones’ internal components.

It’s less “here are the internals through glass” and more “here’s Xiaomi’s idea of what a transparent flagship should look like in 2026.” And that’s probably the point. The Transparent Special Editions aren’t faster or more capable than their regular counterparts. Both come in a single 16GB RAM and 1TB storage configuration, with the same core hardware as the standard models. Their appeal is almost entirely visual — and that’s reflected in the price.

For buyers, the choice between the regular phones comes down to how much hardware they want to carry. The Xiaomi 18 Pro is the smaller option, with the standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and a still-large 7,000mAh battery. The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max steps up to the Extreme chip, a 6.9-inch display, and an 8,500mAh battery. Not a bad way to start a flagship generation.
