Chinese manufacturer Meizu is prepping the launch of the successors to the Meizu 15 lineup in August. And if there’s one takeaway from what we’ve learned about the smartphones so far, it’s that the Meizu 16 and 16 Plus (or Pro, as some claim) seem to follow in the path of the Xiaomi Mi 8 and Mi 8 SE.

First, founder and CEO Jack Wong revealed that the Plus variant will have a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip inside, just like the Mi 8. The other will use the new Snapdragon 710 processor that debuted in the Mi 8 SE.

Second, Wong said that the Meizu 16 will have an under-display fingerprint sensor, which is what the Explorer edition of the Xiaomi Mi 8 has. Whether only the higher-specced version will feature it is not clear, though.

The Vivo X20 Plus UD is the first smartphone to have an in-display fingerprint sensor.

But still, this means the company will join only a handful of brands whose phones rely on a fingerprint reader under the display for security purposes. The others are Vivo and Huawei. Tomorrow, June 19, OPPO will most probably join the two with the launch of the Find X.

Third, Wong confirmed that the front panels of the Meizu 16 and 16 Plus are nearly borderless. In fact, he said that the two will boast a screen-to-body ratio that’s higher than those of the Xiaomi Mi 8 and Apple iPhone X. The latter two have screen-to-body ratios of 83.8 percent and 82.9 percent, respectively. Not Vivo NEX (91.24 percent) and OPPO Find X (93.8 percent) levels, but exciting stuff nonetheless.

The base model of the Meizu 16 is said to come with a 5.6-inch display; 6GB of RAM; either 64GB or 128GB of internal memory; and a 3,080mAh battery. The Plus model, on the other hand, is tipped to feature a 6.1-inch screen; either 6GB or 8GB of RAM; either 128GB or 256GB of native storage; and a 3,600mAh battery.

Both will supposedly have flat — instead of curved — displays; 12-megapixel dual rear cameras; a 20-megapixel selfie shooter; and Android 8.1 Oreo-based Flyme OS out of the box.

These are their alleged prices:

  • Meizu 16 (6GB/64GB): ¥2,999 (around P24,866 in Philippine pesos or $466 in U.S. dollars)
  • Meizu 16 (6GB/128GB): ¥3,299 (P27,353 or $512)
  • Meizu 16 Plus (6GB/128GB): ¥3,699 (P30,670 or $575)
  • Meizu 16 Plus (8GB/256GB): ¥3,999 (P33,157 or $621)

The other detail that’s still up in the air now is the design of the two smartphones.
