Previous leaks point to an upcoming Sony Xperia XZ3 that has two cameras on the back. But that information may turn out to be wrong. Based on a listing on 3D-graphics-benchmark database GFXBench, the smartphone will only have one rear camera — one with a megapixel count that’s close to 50.

A screenshot of the listing below shows a device with model number H8416, believed to be the Xperia XZ3. It features a 5.7-inch screen with 2,160 x 1,080 resolution; a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of memory; Android 8.0; and a 12-megapixel front camera. The part that got our attention? The one where it says the rear-facing camera is 47 megapixels.

Listings usually deviate a point or two from the actual specs, so we have reason to believe that the just-launched 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor will debut on the Sony Xperia XZ3.

The just-launched 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 sensor could debut on the Sony Xperia XZ3.

The sensor uses the same Quad Bayer technology as the 40-megapixel one on the Huawei P20 Pro. On paper, this means that in low-light situations, four pixels will be grouped together to output the equivalent of a 12-megapixel sensor with 1.6μm pixels — resulting in bright, low noise images. In well-lit scenarios, the 2×2 pixel array will have its usual signal processing to be able to come up with 48-megapixel pictures in real time. You can read more about the IMX586 here.

The information above somehow corroborates the renders that Indian tech site CompareRaja and serial leakster Steve Hemmerstoffer, known on Twitter as @OnLeaks, have published. Watch the video.

CompareRaja and Hemmerstoffer claim that the Sony flagship smartphone is IP68-certified; comes with a 3,240mAh battery with support for Sony’s Quick Charge 3; and has a 64GB variant. It might also eventually ship with Android P.

Let’s see how things pan out at the scheduled August 30 Sony event at IFA 2018, when the Xperia XZ3 is expected to become official.
