For years, if you wanted a tiny stabilized camera that didn’t require an engineering degree to balance, you bought a DJI Osmo Pocket. Insta360 is trying to scramble that default choice with the Insta360 Luna Ultra, a new gimbal camera that brute-forces its way into the premium segment with 8K recording and Leica optics.
The pitch is straightforward: Take the high-resolution sensors and color science that usually require a bulky mirrorless setup, and cram them into a form factor you can slide into a jacket pocket.
The marquee feature here is the Leica partnership. While brand collaborations in technology can sometimes amount to little more than a logo slap, Insta360’s previous work with the German camera maker has improved the optical quality and color profiles of its action cams. On the Luna Ultra, that translates to a custom-engineered lens paired with a sensor capable of pushing 8K video.

While 8K is heavy overkill for someone just uploading to TikTok or Instagram Reels, the real-world benefit is framing. Shooting in 8K gives creators huge leeway to crop, punch in, and reframe shots in post-production while still exporting a crisp 4K or 1080p final file.
The camera sits on a 3-axis mechanical gimbal, offering physical stabilization that electronic crops still can’t quite match — especially in low light. Insta360 is also leveraging its usual suite of AI-driven subject tracking, meaning you can set the camera on a table, walk around, and the gimbal head will automatically pan and tilt to keep you dead center in the frame.
