This year’s Mobile World Congress or MWC expo is just a few weeks away. Just like in the past, it will take place in Barcelona in February and is expected to showcase upcoming flagship devices from the industry’s leading names, including Samsung, Huawei, LG, Sony, and a few others.

However, this year’s convention is rumored to be different, as top-end devices from Huawei and LG are not expected to make the overseas trip. According to South Korea’s ETNews, the Huawei P20 and the LG V30+ Alpha won’t be announced at MWC 2018 to avoid a head-on collision with Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ phones.

Word is top-end devices Huawei P20 and LG V30+ Alpha won’t be announced at MWC 2018 to avoid a head-on collision with Samsung’s Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ phones.

If you recall, it was strongly believed that the mainstream premium line would be (quietly) shown at CES 2018. Instead, Samsung told press members attending the major tech event in Las Vegas that the Galaxy S9 and S9+ would be unveiled weeks later in Barcelona — likely on February 25, or before the expo kicks off. This, apparently, was enough to make Huawei and LG rethink their plans.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ are expected to feature the new Exynos 9810 processor, or the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 in select markets, along with a 12-megapixel main camera (the S9+ may have a dual-lens setup) and 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh batteries, respectively.

Huawei is supposed to launch the successor to the P series at MWC 2018, a leaked document showed. But in light of recent reports, ETNews said the announcement of the Huawei P20 triple-camera phone could be pushed back to as late as the first part of April.

LG was previously speculated to take the stage at the next Mobile World Congress to introduce an upgraded and AI-focused version of its existing V30+ smartphone, dubbed the V30+ Alpha. Adding another variant to the V30 lineup is in line with LG’s new strategy retaining flagship models for a longer time, as opposed to an annual release schedule.

Never mind that the LG G7 was reportedly scrapped so that development could start from scratch, pushing back its launch date to no earlier than the second half of 2018, months after the LG V30+ Alpha is released.

It’s worth mentioning that ETNews is a solid source of hardware rumors because of its access to manufacturing pipelines in Samsung and LG’s home country.
