The OPPO R17 Pro is indeed coming to the Philippines soon. The launch has been scheduled for November 7.

The R17 Pro will mark several firsts for the company — not the least of which is the triple-sensor camera setup on the back of the device. It’s also one of the first OPPO units to feature an in-screen fingerprint scanner, a la the Vivo V11 and Huawei Mate 20 Pro, and 50-watt fast charging under the Super VOOC standard. Oh, and it runs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor with 8GB RAM — which is pretty generous already — and 128GB storage.

The OPPO R17 Pro is about as stacked an upper-midrange phone as you’ll see today.

It’s about as stacked an upper-midrange phone as you’ll see today. But if we’re being honest, one of the biggest draws here is the main camera system with a variable aperture of f/1.5 to f/2.4 for night shots.

The 12-megapixel shooter is said to work similarly to the Samsung Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 9‘s adjustable-aperture mechanism. For pictures, it intelligently switches between its two apertures, but it can’t be controlled manually, even in Expert or manual mode.

However, if our experience with the two flagship Samsung phones are any indication, we can expect to see some quality stills from the OPPO R17 Pro regardless of the time of day or lighting considerations. Sure enough, the early results look promising.

We put the R17 Pro through its paces earlier today in the alleyways of Shenzhen, China, and our sample images turned out well — bright enough, colors are nicely saturated, and details are crisp even at the edge of the frame. Highlight and shadow detail are likewise more consistently visible on the R17 Pro than on any OPPO camera we’ve used before.

Moving to the front, the 25-megapixel front-facing camera of the OPPO R17 Pro doesn’t disappoint, too. The f/2.0 aperture lens means faces generally look bright and detailed, as the camera can conjure up more light in the picture in low light.

That’s it for now. Overall, we’re impressed with what the OPPO R17 Pro is able to do with its cameras on the back and front. This is definitely one worth keeping on the lookout for our full review and benchmarks.
