In a surprising announcement, Huawei has launched the Huawei Y8p in the Philippines. The Y8p was first announced for European markets back in May.

Now, it’s here, and the phone offers some interesting features for a decent price. It’s already available exclusively through Huawei’s official brand store on Shopee Philippines until September 8, with the first 200 customers receiving a free pair of Huawei Freelace earphones worth P3,490 (around $72). Locally, the Huawei Y8p is priced at P12,999 ($267) and comes in Midnight Black and Breathing Crystal colors.

The Y8p brings the first OLED screen and in-display fingerprint scanner to the Y series. This is an important feature as OLEDs are typically brighter and more vibrant than their LCD counterparts. The embedded fingerprint sensor also keeps the back of the phone looking neat and sleek without the need for a physical scanner. The screen measures 6.3 inches and adopts a dewdrop notch design for the selfie camera.

For taking pictures, the Huawei Y8p has a triple camera setup on the back consisting of a 48-megapixel, f/1.8 main camera, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide shooter with 120-degree lens, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor for adding bokeh when shooting in Portrait mode. The front-facing sensor is 16 megapixels and sits behind f/2.0 aperture lens.

The battery is 4,000mAh and supports 10-watt charging. The phone also packs a HiSilicon Kirin 710F processor inside, paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB of expandable storage. Yet, even though the Y8p’s chipset is a little old, it comes with Huawei’s latest EMUI 10.1 overlay based on Android 10, along with the Huawei AppGallery app store and GPU Turbo 3.0 for improved performance in supported games.
