Redmi 9 Sport phones add splash resistance, Activ gets more RAM

Though the Redmi 10 has already made its global debut, Xiaomi apparently isn’t done with the Redmi 9 series yet.

The company recently unveiled the Redmi 9A Sport and Redmi 9i Sport in India, bringing some water protection to the budget segment. Both sport splash-resistant plastic shells with P2i coating, which could prove useful if you live in a tropical country like India or the Philippines.

Apart from that, the newly launched phones have identical specs to their 2020 stablemates, so expect a 6.54-inch TFT LCD HD+ display and a MediaTek Helio G25 chipset under the hood. A 5,000mAh battery that supports 10-watt charging powers both devices.

In India, the Redmi 9A Sport and Redmi 9i Sport are priced as follows:

  • Redmi 9A Sport
    • 2GB/32GB: ₹8,499 (around P5,848 or $115)
    • 3GB/32GB: ₹9,499 (P6,537 or $128)
  • Redmi 9i Sport
    • 4GB/64GB: ₹9,999 (P6,881 or $135)
    • 4GB/128GB: ₹10,999 (P7,569 or $148)

Your color options for the Redmi 9A Sport and 9i Sport are Carbon Black, Coral Green, and Metallic Blue.

Xiaomi’s Indian arm also announced a new 6GB/128GB model as well as two new color options — Coral Green and Metallic Purple — for the Redmi 9 Activ, which ditches the blue and orange color schemes from last year. Normally priced at ₹12,999 (P8,942 or $175), the 6GB/128GB variant is currently down to ₹10,999 (P7,569 or $148) on Xiaomi’s official website. The 4GB/64GB unit has a suggested retail price of ₹10,999 (P7,569 or $148) as well.
