MediaTek today unveiled its latest high-end chipset to rival Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 Plus.

This next-gen chip promises to be a powerhouse, boasting cranked-up clock speeds and faster artificial-intelligence processing compared to the Dimensity 9300 featured on the vivo X100 series and OPPO Find X7. It’s poised to be a major player in the upcoming wave of flagship devices, beginning with the vivo X100s and vivo X100s Pro, which will launch May 13. The iQOO Neo 9S Pro smartphone and iQOO Pad 2 Pro tablet, rumored to launch later in May or June, are another early adopters.

The Taiwanese chipmaker touts the MediaTek Dimensity 9300 Plus as a top-end contender for on-device AI. We’re talking accelerated generative AI tasks, wider support for Large Language Models or LLMs, and a general performance leap over the previous generation. On paper, this should translate to smoother experiences with everything from on-device image processing to more responsive and powerful AI-based smartphone features.

On a more technical note, the Dimensity 9300 Plus is built on TSMC’s third-generation 4nm process, just like its predecessor, and packs one Arm Cortex-X4 core operating at up to 3.4GHz, a bump from the 3.25GHz Cortex-X4 core of the base Dimensity 9300. MediaTek’s newest flagship chip also includes three Cortex-X4 performance cores and four Cortex-A720 cores for lightweight tasks.

But raw power isn’t the whole story. The Dimensity 9300 Plus integrates a second-generation hardware-based ray-tracing engine with its Immortalis-G720 GPU. MediaTek says this will deliver smooth 60fps gameplay with ray-tracing effects, bringing console-grade visuals to mobile devices.

The 5G mobile platform also leverages the latest HyperEngine technologies to take gaming to the next level. MediaTek Adaptive Gaming Technology optimizes app performance to bring a significant boost in power efficiency when enabled, helping to extend battery life and keep your device cool during intense gaming sessions.

HyperEngine’s Network Observation System tackles another pain point among mobile gamers: spotty connections. NOS improves WiFi/Cellular dual-network concurrency and leverages network prediction technology. If enabled, gamers can potentially experience up to 10% power savings and a whopping 25% reduction in cellular data usage.
