The tiny-camera comeback is getting a little more serious. Fujifilm has unveiled the Instax Pal 2, a palm-sized digital camera that takes the pocketable appeal of the original Pal and adds something its predecessor lacked: a proper screen and viewfinder.
The timing is hard to ignore. Tiny digital cameras are having a moment among people who want something more spontaneous than pulling out a smartphone, with the Kodak Charmera becoming one of the more recognizable faces of the trend. Fujifilm’s answer isn’t quite a toy camera, though. The Instax Pal 2 looks like a miniature traditional camera, complete with a shutter button, control dial, lever, and optical viewfinder, while keeping the convenience of digital photography.
Available in black and white, the Instax Pal 2 has a Japanese release scheduled for Oct. 9. In the United States, it is expected to arrive in late September with a suggested retail price of $169.95, or about ₱10,660 based on the current exchange rate. Fujifilm Philippines has confirmed that the Instax Pal 2 is “available soon” locally, although the company has yet to announce Philippine pricing or a specific launch date.

The biggest change from the original Instax Pal is the shooting experience. The first Pal was essentially a tiny camera you pointed and shot with, without a built-in screen or viewfinder. The Pal 2 adds a 1-inch LCD monitor on top so you can review what you just captured, along with an optical viewfinder for framing shots the old-fashioned way.
Underneath the retro shell is a 1/3.06-inch sensor capable of capturing 10-megapixel photos, up from 5 megapixels on the original Pal. It uses a 28mm-equivalent f/2.2 lens with autofocus and optional face detection.
Fujifilm is also leaning into the fun of actually using the camera. The Pal 2 has 30 effects across five themes, including Y2K, Vintage, Chromatic, and Fantasy. You can load your preferred effects onto the camera and switch between them using the physical dial, rather than reaching for an app every time you want to change the look of a photo.
There are four shooting formats: Instax Mini, Square, Wide, and a frameless 4:3 mode. A new Instax Animation mode can capture up to 10 consecutive photos and turn them into a flipbook-style animation. Those animations can also be converted into QR codes and included with Instax prints, linking the physical photo to the digital version.
Despite the Instax name, the Pal 2 doesn’t print photos itself. Instead, images can be transferred to the Instax Pal app and printed through compatible Instax Link printers or hybrid cameras such as the Instax Mini Evo and Mini LiPlay.

The camera supports Bluetooth for wireless transfers and USB Type-C for wired connections. It can store up to 100 photos internally and accepts a microSD card. At around 41 grams, it’s also small enough to disappear into a pocket or bag. And that’s really the appeal. Your phone will still be better at image quality, computational photography, and pretty much everything else you’d expect from a modern camera. Fujifilm isn’t trying to beat it at those things.
The Instax Pal 2 is instead selling the experience of carrying a dedicated little camera. There’s something different about raising a viewfinder to your eye, turning a physical dial, and pressing an actual shutter button — even if the resulting photo ends up living on your smartphone.
That’s also where the Pal 2 sits alongside the Kodak Charmera and the broader digicam revival. The Charmera is much smaller and simpler, while Fujifilm’s camera offers a more complete shooting experience at a considerably higher price. They’re not really interchangeable, but both tap into the appeal of making photography feel a little more deliberate and a little less like another thing you do on your handset.
Whether that experience is worth the SRP remains to be seen. But at least Fujifilm isn’t simply making another smartphone accessory. The Instax Pal 2 is a tiny camera designed to make you want to take pictures with a camera again.
