After a flurry of leaks and speculation, the Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus are finally here. The Chinese OEM took the wraps off the pair of budget smartphones at an event in China.

The Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus bear familiar designs and promise longer-than-average usage times at remarkably affordable prices of 799 yuan (around P6,100 or $120) for the 2GB RAM and 16GB storage model of the Redmi 5. The Redmi 5 Plus starts at 999 yuan (P7,600 or $150) for the 3GB RAM and 32GB storage variant.

They’re built around capable midrange Qualcomm processors fitted with up to 4GB of RAM and up to 64GB of storage (in the Plus model). A dated but capable Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 pushes the pixels for the Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus, whereas the Redmi 5 uses the newer Snapdragon 450 platform that powers the Vivo V7 and the Vivo V7+. That said, neither of these Xiaomi releases compromise on performance, materials, or cost.

The kicker here, however, is their 18:9 displays that make viewing content more enjoyable and immersive. Predictably, the Redmi 5 Plus sees a larger, sharper 6-inch display compared to the Xiaomi Redmi 5, which crams a 5.7-inch, 720p touchscreen into a body nearly the size of a regular smartphone.

They include beefy batteries inside, too, with the larger Redmi using a 4,000mAh battery, while the standard variant gets a 3,300mAh cell. Both units should be able to get you through a full day of use, at least according to Xiaomi. Around the back, you’ll find a fingerprint reader and a single camera accompanied by an LED flash.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus should be available in their native China from December 12, but there is no word on their availability in international markets. Don’t be surprised to see them (unofficially) go on sale online in the Philippines, though.
