Another quad-camera smartphone is about to be added to Huawei’s arsenal. The Huawei Y9 (2018) has been spotted on the website of Chinese communications commission TENAA. Its back is shown to have a pair of cameras aligned in a horizontal position. Word has it that it will be announced in Thailand on March 15, though we haven’t seen any launch teasers thus far.

In the Philippines, the Huawei Nova 2i is the company’s only handset with four cameras, the rear ones of which are placed vertically at the center, on top of the fingerprint sensor. It was launched to much acclaim in October 2017 because of the value it gives for its palatable price of P14,990 (about $289). To top it off, there was a a free JBL Flip 3 splash-proof portable speaker worth P6,495 ($125) for early adopters. In Thailand, however, it cost higher at ฿10,900 (P18,103 or $348) at launch.

How do these two quad-camera devices stack up against each other? Because you asked for it, we’ve made a specs comparison between the Huawei Y9 (2018) and Nova 2i. We’ll update this as soon as the Y9 gets official (contrary to reports circulating today, March 11, it has not been announced in our neighboring country yet).

Specs-wise, it looks as though the major differences lie in the camera systems and battery. The Huawei Y9 (2018)’s dual-rear-camera setup sees a 13-megapixel sensor paired with a 2-megapixel one, and the camera at the front is a dual 16-megapixel + 2-megapixel. On the Huawei Nova 2i, though, those two have been interchanged, with the main rear camera getting a higher megapixel count.

With regard to the battery, the one on the Nova has a lower capacity at 3,340mAh compared to the Y9’s 3,900mAh.

The latter will also ship with Android 8.0 out of the box. But take note that the Android Oreo beta program for the Huawei Nova 2i is already ongoing, so every owner of the phone should be getting an OS update over the air real soon.

Will the Huawei Y9 (2018) be available in the Philippines — if not as the Y9, then as part of the Nova series? That, we’ll have to see.
