The Huawei P20 Pro is one of the most desirable phones ever made. And why wouldn’t it be? It looks especially striking in gradient purple; it doesn’t mind getting wet; it’s fast and offers a ton of storage space; and, most notably, the cameras are crazy good. But it’s also something of a luxury to own, with the P20 Pro retailing at P44,990 (around $872) in the Philippines.

Which is what makes the Umidigi Z2 and Z2 Pro exciting prospects for those watching their spending closely. The phones were recently made official, sporting sizable notch displays and a design language that should make Huawei blush. Or file a lawsuit. They even feature gradient coloring in two options — Twilight and Phantom.

Too obvious? Well, at least the main cameras on their glass backs look different, and their fingerprint readers are located where you’d expect them to be — below the camera setup. As both phones don’t have physical buttons below their displays, the front panels of the Umidigi Z2 and Z2 Pro lean toward the Apple iPhone X‘s look more than the Huawei P20 Pro’s.

Specs-wise, only the partial details of the Z2 Pro are available at press time. The rest will be unveiled on May 9 when the Umidigi Z2 and Z2 Pro make their debut at the company’s launch event.

As for the latter, it will come with a 6.2-inch, full-resolution display with a 19:9 aspect ratio. The same MediaTek Helio P60 chipset inside the OPPO F7 fuels the device, along with Android 8.1 Oreo. In our F7 review, we noted that the Helio P60 is a strong performer, with plenty of firepower for 3D gaming. The RAM is 6GB; the storage, generous at 128GB.

There are four cameras on the device — 16- and 8-megapixel sensors behind each pair of lenses framed on both ends. Fast wired or wireless charging will be part of the package as well.

The Umidigi Z2 Pro is expected to be priced at around $300 (P15,486), or a fraction of the Huawei P20 Pro’s retail value off contract.

In addition to announcing the Z2 series, Umidigi is also holding a contest to dole out one of five Z2 units that the company will give away. You can join the by visiting its website.
