While the government’s public WiFi initiative seems to be in limbo at the moment, one company has doubled down on its efforts to provide the masses with free and, perhaps more importantly, fast Internet, albeit in only one address for the time being.

Globe Telecom today announced a high-speed public WiFi service in the upscale commercial area at Serendra in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.

Globe Telecom today announced a high-speed public WiFi service that delivers download speeds of up to 100 megabits per second.

By high speed, I mean downloads of up to 100 megabits per second, though you’re more likely to get less as foot traffic picks up. Globe expects the average speed to be 16Mbps, which is still impressive by local standards. The areas covered by the complimentary WiFi network include restaurants and other businesses in the Serendra area.

But, as with most good things, there’s a catch: In this case, there’s a limit to how long users can stay connected. Globe users get 60 minutes of access daily, while everyone else gets half an hour.

Obviously, the limited coverage area is a bummer, but Globe says Serendra “is the first of many areas in the country that will be covered.” Here’s hoping the high-speed WiFi service will be rolled out across the country sooner rather than later.
