MediaTek, the current market leader in the mobile chipset category, has launched a new 5G chip under its Dimensity line.

Dubbed the MediaTek Dimensity 1300, the processor is the successor to the excellent and hugely popular Dimensity 1200, which you’ll find in the global variant of the Vivo X70 5G, POCO F3 GT, and OnePlus Nord 2, among many others. You might recall that last year’s X70 was priced at P34,999 (around $679 converted) in the Philippines at launch.

It’s built on a 6nm TSMC process and features eight processing cores with four Cortex-A78 performance cores scaling up to 3GHz (on one core) and four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores for everyday smartphone tasks. The graphics are handled by a Mali-G77 MC9 unit equipped with nine GPU cores.

In terms of memory, the MediaTek Dimensity 1300 supports up to 16GB LPDDR4x RAM alongside UFS 3.1 storage. Additionally, it can accommodate up to a 168Hz display at FHD+ resolution.

The chip’s image signal processor can handle up to a single 200-megapixel camera, putting it on a par with its predecessor, as well as similar high-end offerings from Qualcomm.

On paper, there’s no denying the Dimensity 1300 could put up a good fight against the Snapdragon 870 — and Qualcomm’s follow-up to it — for sub-flagship supremacy. Hopefully, we’ll be able to settle the score once the first Dimensity 1300-powered phones hit the market later this year. MediaTek has yet to confirm the devices that will use its latest offering, but the OnePlus Nord 2T has been tipped to be one of them.
