Qualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3, its latest mid-level mobile processor, arriving in 4G and 5G flavors. But hold your horses for a groundbreaking upgrade because, well, let’s just say the “new” chip might raise some eyebrows.
Here’s the thing: Based on the official specs, Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 might be a mere rehash of the Snapdragon 695 5G from 2021. You know, the one powering devices like the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G, POCO X4 Pro 5G, realme 9 Pro 5G, realme 10 Pro 5G, and OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite 5G, just to name a few? Not exactly an inspiring move by the company.
To add fuel to the fire, Qualcomm also released a confusingly similar chip in 2022 — the Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 — which was essentially another iteration of the Snapdragon 695 5G.
Just like its predecessors, the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 uses TSMC’s 6nm process node and sports a combination of Cortex-A78 and Cortex-A55 CPU cores. The only noteworthy difference? A slight bump in clock speed for both sets of cores. We’re talking a max of 2.3GHz for the Cortex-A78s and 2.0GHz for the Cortex-A55s.
The graphics department sees the inclusion of an Adreno 619 GPU, further strengthening the case for the newly launched SoC being a mildly overclocked Snapdragon 695 5G. But the real disappointment lies in the camera capabilities. The chip’s image signal processor maxes out at a measly 1080p video capture at 60 frames per second. In 2024?
Based on recent benchmark leaks, the upcoming Motorola G85 could be the first device powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 6s Gen 3. Here’s hoping it proves to be more than just a forgettable refresh.
