It’s here. After years of speculation, patent filings, and industry whispers, Apple has finally unveiled its boldest product since the Vision Pro. Unlike the company’s first foray into the VR headset market — and the first iPhone Air, which didn’t sell quite as well as expected — this one will likely enjoy a longer lifespan and see plenty of future iterations.

We, of course, are talking about the Apple iPhone Duo, the American technology giant’s first foldable smartphone.

Foldable phones have been around for a while, and the form factor is hardly new territory for the industry. But this is Apple. The brand’s approach to hardware has always been closely tied to the overall user experience, from the interface and software to the ways developers can take advantage of a new form factor. That makes Apple’s first foldable particularly interesting, and not just because of the hardware itself, but because of what the company and its developer ecosystem might do with it at launch and beyond.

The (eye-watering) price of innovation

However, we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Let’s talk about pricing first.

As expected of Apple, the iPhone Duo’s price tag is astronomical. This is partly due to the premium nature of the Cupertino giant’s first-generation folding device, but it’s also heavily driven by the current memory and storage shortage facing the industry. In the United States, the base 256GB model starts at $1,999, scaling up to around $3,199 for the top-tier configuration with 2TB of internal storage. Your color options are Night Sky (read: black) and Star White.

For the local market, Apple’s pricing strategy reflects the harsh reality of a weaker Philippine peso. With the currency recently hitting historic lows against the U.S. dollar, the exchange rate contributes to what is easily the most expensive iPhone lineup we’ve seen yet.

Titanium meets matte

The Apple iPhone Duo is crafted from aerospace-grade 5 titanium with a mirror-polished finish, keeping the chassis thin. It carries an IP68 rating for splash, water, and dust resistance. The precision hinge features more than 100 components and snaps shut with a secure magnetic mechanism.

On the outside, you get a 5.5-inch cover screen protected by Ceramic Shield 2, which offers three times better scratch resistance. Its passport-style form factor unfolds to reveal an expansive 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR main display. To minimize the visibility of the folding crease and curb reflections, Apple integrated a matte nano-texture finish. Reversing earlier rumors of a shelved smaller stylus, the iPhone Duo natively supports the Apple Pencil for sketching and annotating documents on the go.

Big screen, bigger performance

If you care about frame-rate stability and thermal dissipation during heavy mobile gaming, the internal architecture brings some notable upgrades. The iPhone Duo runs on a 2-nanometer A20 Pro chipset alongside an in-house C2 modem. The six-core CPU is up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro, while the seven-core GPU is 40% faster. Apple also threw in a new dual 16-core NPU with 50% more unified memory bandwidth.

Perhaps more impressively, the internals — inspired by Apple’s M-series silicon — connect the A20 Pro directly to a custom vapor chamber to aggressively dissipate heat. That cooling system translates to up to 35% better sustained performance during high-frame-rate gaming and complex multitasking compared with the iPhone 17 Pro.

To keep the lights on, there’s a dual-battery system engineered for heavy use. You get up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, 44 hours when restricted to the outer screen, and a solid 24 hours of mixed average usage. And when you finally run low on juice, the company claims you can get a 50% charge in about 20 minutes.

Cameras and iOS 27 multitasking

The camera system handles both traditional photography and foldable-specific tasks. The rear houses a 48-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide, both supporting 4K video recording at 120 fps. Meanwhile, the 12-megapixel shooter on the cover display is designed heavily around Center Stage. Taking advantage of the form factor, the iPhone Duo supports dual capture in FaceTime, allowing you to record from both the front and rear cameras simultaneously.

You can also prop the phone in various folded orientations to trigger StandBy mode, turning it into a bedside clock or widget hub even when unplugged.

Tying it all together is the updated iOS 27 interface, tailored specifically for the folding experience. The inner display brings iPad-style Split View to this iPhone, letting you run side-by-side apps or two windows of the exact same app.

Apple is launching this model with first- and third-party apps optimized for the foldable screen — something we typically don’t see when other OEMs launch a foldable, likely because they lack the same pull within the industry and among app developers. Ultimately, this could be a win for all of us, not just the Apple faithful. When developers create these optimized, foldable-focused features, they can eventually bring them to other foldables running Android. We’ll see.
